Tomas is een trotse, hardwerkende en zeer intelligente immigrant vol schuldgevoelens. Na een brand in zijn woning wordt hij in een huis geplaatst dat wordt gerund door Magda, die voor haar gehandicapte moeder zorgt. Al snel komt Tomas erachter dat er iets ernstig mis is in het huishouden. Een unieke filmtrip creëert een aangrijpende wereld die net zo geweldig voelt als dat hij klinkt. De debuutfilm van acteur/regisseur Romola Garai maakt op zeer creatieve wijze gebruik van ruimte en set design, maar vooral van montage en sound design. De stijl van de film, voortrazend in een reeks snelle, abrupte cuts, draagt bij aan de algemene verwarring en sinisterheid van het verhaal. Amulet kent tenminste twee grote twists, waarvan de tweede voor zowel ons als voor de hoofdrolspeler een totale ommekeer betekent, waardoor we onze positie ten opzichte van bepaalde personages moeten herzien. Het einde bevat een paar waanzinnige over-the-top beelden, die Amulet tot een unieke filmtrip maken. Amulet weet een aangrijpende wereld te scheppen die net zo geweldig voelt als dat hij klinkt. This film left me feeling quite unsettled, however, the story itself could have used some serious polishing. At times, it dragged on to the point where I found myself incredibly bored, almost to the point of exasperation. Categorized as a psychological horror, the film attempted to psychologically disturb me with some truly repulsive elements. Yet, the biggest issue for me was the setting itself. I couldn't help but notice the constant reminders of my upcoming window replacements and painting job next week. All that mold and peeling paint left me feeling rather uneasy. Adding to the discomfort, even the actors themselves weren't particularly easy on the eyes, leaving me aesthetically deprived. / Lesson learned: Do unto others as you would have them do unto you. 2*+

For a long time, Amulet remains an unclear and only slightly interesting psychological game, but in the end it is surprising, makes sense and even pulls off a certain winking humor. As a representative of indie horror, it is marked by inexperienced directing, but it is held together by its good subject matter with a higher purpose. Evil, demonism, guilt, repentance and punishment. A-list British actress Imelda Staunton appears in a supporting yet iconic role.

This anticipated British debut is a fine first feature, but it suffers from a slower pace and not very interesting protagonists, though it also offers an unpleasant haggardness similar to Relic. An ex-soldier has nowhere to live and is offered a free place in a dilapidated house with a young woman and her dying mother. But he soon discovers that something is wrong in the house. It's a shame that the film drags a bit and isn't very suspenseful, as the individual sequences have quite a bit of power. The scene with the bat in the toilet was literally a heart attack inducing scare for me, and there was some disturbing gore in the finale. Granny is creepy as hell and overall it has a very strange to weird atmosphere. An interesting horror film that is definitely one of the better ones, but there was still something missing for me to give it a higher rating. Story***, Action>No, Humor>No, Violence***, Entertainment***, Music***, Visuals***, Atmosphere****, Suspense**. 6/10.
