Recensie van Necrotongue voor deze serie (12)

The Black Adder (1983) (S01)

Engels I consider the first season to be the weakest one, albeit still excellent. My biggest problem is with Rowan Atkinson, who is too much like Mr.Bean here, which doesn’t sit well with me. I prefer him in more intelligent roles. On the other hand, Brian Blessed as Richard IV is absolutely brilliant in the first season, and he takes the spotlight in every scene he's in. ()

The Foretelling (1983) (S01E01)

Engels The first episode of the series still suffered from childhood illnesses, Rowan Atkinson appeared more like Mr. Bean with exaggerated facial expressions rather than Edmund Black Adder, and Brian Blessed was still finding his footing, so it didn't receive better ratings yet. But without any hesitation, I admit that I was thoroughly entertained in some parts. ()

Born to Be King (1983) (S01E02)

Engels Truth be told, the humor was occasionally quite desperate, but nonetheless, I had a great time because Brian Blessed was in full swing, and his King Richard stole the episode for himself when he reappeared on stage. It's interesting to see how Percy and Baldrick are still just inconspicuous background characters :-) ()

The Archbishop (1983) (S01E03)

Engels Because I have a similar relationship to the church as King Richard, I really enjoyed myself during the third episode, although it is true that Rowan Atkinson belonged to the weaker parts of the first series. Brian Blessed absolutely dominated that one for me. If I could ever travel to Turkey, I wouldn't dare to do it without him. ()

The Queen of Spain's Beard (1983) (S01E04)

Engels The fourth episode was just slightly weaker for me than the previous one. I had a great time again, medieval politics were quite tricky on their own, but King Richard moved through them like a fish in water. Miriam Margolyes was excellent, when I saw her in the movie Stalin as Nadezhda Krupskaya, every scene of hers reminded me of the Spanish Infanta and it was perfect. Fantastic role by Jim Broadbent :-) ()

Witchsmeller Pursuivant (1983) (S01E05)

Engels I initially thought of giving this episode four stars, but then I realized how much I enjoyed it. It should be required viewing for anyone quick to accuse and judge without evidence, like in the MeToo movement. Funny and insightful. ()

The Black Seal (1983) (S01E06)

Engels The season finale didn't excite me much. King Richard was the highlight, but the rest of the episode fell flat. I didn't find it particularly funny, which is disappointing for this show. ()

Blackadder II (1986) (S02)

Engels The second season is an absolute treat. Rowan Atkinson doesn't rely on making goofy grimaces anymore but chooses to do comedy through spoken word. The cast is excellent, especially Miranda Richardson as Elizabeth I is fantastic and creates a similar atmosphere of joy and happiness among her favorites as Joseph Vissarionovich Dzhugashvili was able to spread among his comrades. ()

Bells (1986) (S02E01)

Engels The first episode of the second series really made me enjoy Edmund Blackadder. Rowan Atkinson ditched the exaggerated Mr. Bean expressions, and started delivering the witty, sarcastic humor that I love. I had a great time watching, and I'm glad leeches are no longer a common medical treatment. ()

Head (1986) (S02E02)

Engels With the first season gone, I miss Brian Blessed, but Miranda Richardson as Elizabeth is a great replacement. She’s clearly having a blast in the role. The second episode perfectly contradicts the saying, “Never put off till tomorrow what you can do today.” Sometimes, it’s worth the wait. ()

Blackadder the Third (1987) (S03)

Engels The third season should bear the subtitle ‘The Untold History of England’. As usual, an excellent affair in which the protagonist leaves the ranks of the nobility and must serve as a butler to the Prince Regent. The central trio of Rowan Atkinson, Tim McInnerny, and Tony Robinson have broken up, Tim McInnerny was replaced by Hugh Laurie, which was not a bad move at all. You could tell that the future doctor House was clearly enjoying the role of Prince George. ()

Blackadder Goes Forth (1989) (S04)

Engels A fantastic conclusion to an excellent saga with a traditionally great cast and amazing humor with a slightly bitter aftertaste. Season 4 takes on an anti-war tone, giving you some food for thought while you are rolling on the floor laughing. The ending of the final episode was a masterpiece. ()
