Victoria And Abdul vertelt het waargebeurde verhaal van de buitengewone vriendschap tussen Koningin Victoria (Judi Dench) en Abdul Karim (Ali Fazal), een jonge klerk uit India. Wanneer Abdul Karim vanuit India afreist om mee te werken aan de vieringen rond het Gouden Jubileum van de koningin, blijkt er een klik te zijn tussen hen beide. Terwijl Koningin Victoria steeds meer moeite heeft met de strenge regels die haar positie als vorstin met zich meebrengt, wordt de band tussen de twee hechter. De mensen en bedienden om hen heen proberen allen deze band te verbreken. Hun vriendschap wordt echter steeds sterker en de koningin gaat de wereld met andere ogen bekijken. Judi Dench and Ali Fazal worked together, and they make this story properly playful, yet poignant. In terms of plot, it's not exactly revelatory, but when you have good actors, they're great to watch. And here, even more so, because they are all in really beautiful costumes that capture the period perfectly.

I was entertained by the unexpected humor in the first half of the film, which decreased in the second half due to a more melancholy mood. But that’s okay, I don’t need to laugh all the way through. Judi Dench was great and made the whole film.
