Josef von Sternberg (1894-1969) was an American film director of Austrian origin. He made his debut in New York City with the feature film The Salvation Hunters (1925), a low-budget production. He established himself with the gangster film Underworld (1927), then in Berlin he made his legendary sound film The Blue Angel (Der blau Engel, 1930). From his other Hollywood films we'll mention Shanghai Express (1932) and The Scarlet Empress (1934).
