Denemarken, 1967. Op straat zijn er dagelijks demonstraties tegen de oorlog in Vietnam, kranten en tv-zenders berichten over de race om de eerste man op de maan te brengen en in heel Europa komt een nieuwe jeugdcultuur op. Voor de broertjes Elmer en Erik zijn dromen over vrijheid en blijheid echter ver weg. Wanneer hun alleenstaande moeder ernstig ziek wordt, stuurt de staat hen naar een jongensinternaat. Aan het hoofd staat de sadistische en rechtlijnige directeur Heck, die zijn ouderwetse opvoedingsmethodes met harde hand toepast. Hij gebruikt de jongens als goedkope werkkrachten en houdt ze in het gareel met lijfstraffen, vernederingen en medicijnen. Elmer en Erik zetten dan ook alles op alles om het internaat te ontvluchten. The Danes are masters of this type of poignant drama that make you clench your hands in fury over the adversity and injustice the main characters have to face. Lars Mikkelsen is a horrible creature, the kids are alright.

A rough and sometimes unbelievable story. The story is all the more absurd when I see the past Denmark is nowadays answering for and how, on the other hand, people in Scandinavia in general currently treat children. Extremes create only extremes and this movie is a prime example of this.

If you want a drama with a perfectly bleak atmosphere, go for it. The Danes came with another film about an orphanage, but this story of two brothers was right up my alley, and I really enjoyed it. I got to see Lars Mikkelsen in quite a few series and movies (April 9th the last time) and he always delivers a great performance, but this time he outdid himself and provided a really chilling experience for me.
