He directed for the first time in 1915, and went on to become one of the most commercially successful Hollywood directors of the 1920s and 1930s. He was nominated for the best director Oscar twice. In 1944, he was awarded the first ever Golden Globe Award for Best Director for his film The Song of Bernadette, based on the novel of the same title written by Franz Werfel.
