Michael Murphy

With an acting career that successfully spans film, television, and theater, Michael Murphy has always been not only a respected "actor's actor," but a favorite of such directing icons as Robert Altman, Woody Allen, Paul Mazursky, Peter Weir, Tim Burton, Oliver Stone, Elia Kazan, Peter Bogdanovich, Martin Ritt,Robert Aldrich, Orson Welles, John Badham, Paul Thomas Anderson and John Sayles.

His cult-favorite TV series TANNER 88 – a mockumentary about a fictional presidential campaign starring Murphy as Jack Tanner, a presidential contender on the campaign trail – was updated by its creators Robert Altman and Gary Trudeau. With new interviews featuring Murphy and his co-stars, it aired on the Sundance Channel during the 2004 Presidential campaign.

Additionally, the busy actor has completed three new films besides Merchant/Ivory's HEIGHTS. They are Buena Vista's IN THE DARK, Don McKellar's CHILDSTAR, and John Sayles’ SILVER. Some of Murphy’s classic feature credits include: MAGNOLIA (S.A.G. nomination for best ensemble), KANSAS CITY, BATMAN RETURNS, SALVADOR, THE YEAR OF LIVING DANGEROUSLY, MANHATTAN, THE FRONT, AN UNMARRIED WOMAN, NASHVILLE, WHAT’S UP, DOC?, BREWSTER MCCLOUD and M.A.S.H.

For years, Murphy lived in New York while performing in theater but now resides with his family, daughter and actress-wife Wendy Crewson in Toronto, where he stars as a judge in the new CBC satiric comedy series THIS IS WONDERLAND, written by Canada’s renowned playwright George F. Walker.
