Jakob's Wife (2021)

Engels A dark vampire romance with horror veterans Barbara Crampton and Larry Fessenden. It's not bad at all. The plot unfolds slowly, but it gains quite decent momentum towards the end. The acting is fine, considering the lower budget, the atmosphere doesn't captivate much, but there is a reasonable amount of blood (plenty of blood spraying from the carotid arteries). The rats crawling around the house are also interesting, and there are some quite interesting music choices. It's been a while since there was a vampire movie, and even though there's still room for improvement, I don't have any significant issues with it, and Jakob's Wife will receive an average rating from me. 5.5/10.

Nobody (2021)

EngelsGive me the goddamn kitty cat bracelet, motherfucker!” This magnificent action masterpiece that flips the finger to all the trashy action movies and hated entities that will suffer and sigh about how little dramatic, emotional, and philosophical its. I suffered through those boring artsy dramas for over a year, so fucking finally it's my turn for satisfaction, and I've reached more peaks than a horny nymphomaniac. Nobody takes the best from Taken, The Equalizer, and John Wick, and even though it borrows a few ideas, it upgrades, evolves and transforms them to a much bigger and more intense level, and it's an absolute gem in every way. Bob Odenkirk, at 58 years old, as a family man, shows that he has bigger balls than the entire Russian mafia. He trained intensely for two years, learned martial arts, worked like crazy for the role of an action hero, and you can fucking see it. He's a splendid and charismatic badass hero with a mysterious past that demands respect and nobody wants anything to do with him. He delivers great lines, is very convincing in action, very resourceful, intelligent, and you can see that he's still just a human, so he gets his ass kicked as well, he feels fatigue, vulnerability, and exhaustion. A precise technical aspect, a perfectly fitting soundtrack, honest old-school craftsmanship with well-utilized R-rated action, lots of great and funny ideas, the insertion of exaggeration into action scenes works absolutely perfectly, and there are several moments that I feel like replaying immediately. The grandpa is excellent, and his messing around with a pistol and a shotgun is awesome. The fight on the bus is properly tough and uncompromising, the shootout in the house is atmospherically intense, and the finale in the warehouse literally shatters your balls – I purred with pleasure like I haven't in a long time. (Putting the sniper rifle on the shoulder, firing and instantly knocking out the other guy with the recoil just blew me away). I also liked the Russian villain, and the action and the story itself are definitely above standard. If an action fan doesn't appreciate Nobody, they might as well commit seppuku or find another hobby. American cinema won't make a better action movie. After watching, of course, sweaty like Usain Bolt running the 100 meters, and that's how I like it! I hope for a sequel already in theaters and preferably with Naishuller collaborating with Evans and Stahelski. 10/10.

The Marksman (2021)

Engels Weak. It's funny that suddenly people are complaining about a lack of action, if it were present from beginning to end, they would complain about the lack of a story, unfortunately these two things rarely go together, so it's disappointing that the director chose, unfortunately for me, the less attractive option. It's okay for killing a boring Sunday afternoon, Liam Neeson still has enough charisma to annoy me, but his joints obviously don't work well anymore and the cartel killers didn't inspire much respect. 5/10.

The Box Assassin (2020)

Engels Awesome three minutes! Excellent CGI visuals, original, funny, entertaining. I would take ten minutes, maybe even a whole feature film with this concept, it did entertain me. 7/10.

Altered Carbon: Resleeved (2020)

Engels Excellent surprise!! A beautifully done anime from the world of Altered Carbon. For an average second season, this is a pleasant patch. Takeshi Kovacs against the Yakuza in a cyberpunk package, with excellent and polished fights (the choreography is really great in some places) and samurai-ninjas, that's my thing. I also liked the decent dose of gore, with blood spraying abundantly and no shortage of severed limbs. Story-wise, it may not be captivating, but the action side easily makes up for it. A wild ride! 8/10.

Them (2021) (serie)

Engels Get Out of His House! Us? or Them!!! Jordan Peele's signature and inspiration can be felt from miles around and if you liked previous films in a similar vein, Them will not disappoint you. I usually have a problem with horror series as the horror side tends to be neglected, and Them is mostly social drama, but thankfully the drama works well enough that I'm not annoyed or bored, and certainly in the field of horror-drama series Them is one of the best that has come along in years. The horror scenes rely on quality rather than quantity, there aren’t many regular scares, mostly the standard one or two horror scenes per episode, but Vera and the Jewish Priest are impressive, and I rank the scene on the bus among the most atmospheric. The digression in episode 5 is nasty, reminiscing of hixploitation flicks, or the scene with the dancers, which strongly reminds of Suspiria. The first-class technical aspect is definitely impressive, the acting great, especially the children are excellent and it boggles my mind how a 15 year old girl can play emotions better than any actor. I enjoyed the sheriff a lot, for the fact that he was an unknown actor, he stole most of his scenes. I also liked the atmosphere and the pervasive stuffiness. The series keeps a decent pace (except for episode 9, I rank it among the worst). I found the 7th episode downright shocking and the best. Cons: I was expecting more wildness in the finale, the ghosts go away in the second half of the series and it's a shame that the scenes from the school were sparse, because they were very intense. 8/10.

Decommissioned (2021)

Engels Decent atmosphere, slightly marred by the shorter running time. An interesting concept set in space, where the main character from an artificial satellite sees an astronaut heading towards him, who is supposed to be somewhere completely different. 6/10.

A Writer's Odyssey (2021)

Engels A fantasy medieval version of The Lord of the Rings! A dream come true for fans of games, fantasy, intense action, but even fans of original and great stories will enjoy this, it's a blast! Dark Souls, "Sekiro", "Bloodborne", Assassin's Creed all in one!! The story follows a young author of a fantasy novel that has an effect on the real world. There are two different plotlines, and fortunately, each is interesting in its own way. In the real world, a hired killer is after the author, who has an interesting ability. In the fantasy world, we follow a young warrior who faces a tyrant-god with an army of skilled assassins (gorgeous armor!). I don't know what to praise first. The action is absolutely thrilling and grandiose, it has a beautiful video game look, amazing choreography, plenty of blood, perfect camera work, great music, enough emotions, and excellent pacing. Thanks to the two timelines, there are two grand finales (half an hour long!), and I can't remember which movie could boast about that. Apart from the amazing action, the intricate and quite demanding story is also captivating, offering a few unexpected plot twists. Utmost satisfaction. I was looking forward to it a lot and I got even more. This will rank very high in this year's genre rankings. 10/10.

Cannibal (2006)

Engels Warning! Only for a brave, marginal, and minority audience. The twisted and artistically oriented director Marián Dora serves a shocking story based on true events. Really strong stuff. An obsessed cannibal searches through the internet for someone willing to be voluntarily eaten, and soon he receives a response from an impatient victim. The first hour passes very slowly, we witness the acquaintance between the cannibal and his victim, and their mutual "playfulness", where it's noticeable that the victim is surprisingly more dominant, but otherwise it's a bit boring and watching two naked guys isn't exactly something that entertains me. But the final half hour is extreme and pure depravity that shocks even after years. We see a detailed dissection of a human being, where nothing is left in the end. Sleazy dirty atmosphere, realistic gore, depressive piano music, an artistic touch, and thorough character psychology. In one sentence: deviant, extreme, unrewarding, dirty, nasty, shocking, crossing all possible boundaries, that's Cannibal from the artistic twisted soul of Marián Dora! I do not recommend it to people who feel nauseous from violence. Watch only at your own risk, it may result in lifelong psychological problems 😃 6/10.

Torment (2017)

Engels Uff! This one went over my head. Adam Ford is another sick bastard, but unfortunately, his style doesn't suit me. A warm, fat, washed-up clown tortures and rapes two men in his house. The film is silent, which is maybe good, but at times it's a bit boring. It’s disgusting, sleazy, and perverse, it's quite a lot, but in a direction that doesn't appeal to me. There's almost no gore (just one severed head, which is really not enough) and most of the time it focuses on sex and anal play, which may please homosexuals, but watching 70 minutes of torture gay porn is unbearable for me, I really wished for it to end. If he tortured two women, it might have been more tolerable, but this really didn't interest or entertain me. The attempt to shock definitely works, and for that, I'll give it two stars, I can't give more. 3/10.
