De LEGO film (2014)

Engels Quite funny, imaginative, entertaining and with a clever twist. The animation is rather average, but I wasn't bored. 70%

Fast & Furious 8 (2017)

Engels Before the screening I was sure of five stars in the end it's only a very strong four. This series more or less started to entertain me only from the 5th episode, since the previous episodes were only about racing and I don't like that much. Now it's turned into something that absolutely disregards physics, gravity and logic and a lot of people can't stomach it, but if it wasn't for that, I'd never see what this franchise shows in a movie because no other movie could afford to do that and I'm grateful to this franchise for that. There are a lot of great actors, great modern music, pretty women, fast cars, the money is damn evident in every frame, for me as a modern young person it's very enjoyable to watch and I have a great time. Tyrese Gibson brings me to my knees with his wit, Jason Statham is a decent second, although in my opinion he was much funnier in Spy, still these roles suit him and I would definitely only give him action comedies in the future, rather than the B-movie actioners that a lot of others are making. The biggest highlights of this episode are the car hacking, which again is something not seen anywhere else, and the 20 minute finale with the submarine, torpedoes and monstrous explosions which is breathtaking. What's a downside, and the reason I'm not giving full marks, is that the fights have been significantly reduced, there's really only a stylish jailbreak and Statham's excellent baby dance, that's the end of the fights and there's no shooting, which was a bit more frustrating than disappointing. I liked the previous episodes a bit more, I find the eighth returns more to the old ways i.e. the racing which I don't welcome too warmly. Charlize Theron as a baddie is great, too bad there wasn't a female lead. Still, it must be seen in the cinema and I'll definitely watch the film again. 80%.

The Edge of Seventeen (2016)

Engels I ignored the film at first, but on the recommendation of a friend I gave it a chance and am in mute amazement at how perfect it was. For me one of the best coming of age movies of all time. Hailee Steinfeld deserves an Oscar, because there couldn't be a better portrayal of a petulant teenager who is ignored by her suicidal surroundings. On top of that, a perfect Woody Harrelson, a bit of wit, lots of nostalgia from his youth and strong emotions accompany the whole film. I watched it till 3am as if I had drunk 5 Red Bulls. A clear 5 stars.

Viking (2016)

Engels The long-awaited film from Russia did not stand up to the quality of the trailer, but it is still a great spectacle from a Viking setting, which, not counting the series The Last Kingdom and Vikings, has almost no competition. Visually, this is probably the best thing the Russians have ever made. All the colors, the setting, the costumes and the whole production design is breathtaking. The acting is also good, there is quite a bit of action and it is properly gritty, clearly shot and spectacular. My only criticism is the longer running time and the not very interesting story, which didn't draw me in as much as I expected, but hats off to it nonetheless. 75%

Free Fire (2016)

Engels The new film from director Ben Wheatley, who hasn't been my cup of tea so far (High Rise, Kill List, Sightseers), but his Free Fire is one of his most ambitious efforts without a doubt. This time he has a decent cast featuring Cillian Murphy, Brie Larson, Sharlto Copley and Armie Hammer. The story takes place in a warehouse where a misunderstanding occurs during a gun exchange, culminating in a nearly hour-long shootout where no one escapes unscathed. It's pretty good to watch, the shootouts are fun, there is even some blood, only that after a while I found the film so tiresome and monotonous that I was looking forward to the ending, which is a negative card. If I had skipped the movie at the cinema and watched it at home, I wouldn't have missed anything. Story 6/10, Atmosphere 6/10, Gore 5/10, Visuals 6/10, Action 6/10, Suspense 5/10,Humor 5/10. Entertainment 6/10, Scares 0/10.

The Void (2016)

Engels With this year's drought so far, we have an excellent anticipated piece. The Void has several plus points. It is set in a hospital, which always had, has and will have its own atmosphere, because as one of the actresses says, according to statistics, most people die there. The pace is fast and it gets going more or less from the start, which is also a very welcome thing. The characters confined to the hospital don't all work together, which again creates an uncomfortable stuffiness in the air. The best thing, however, is the honest make-up work and the mechanical effects, which make you reminisce about the 80s, and surprisingly it doesn't sound at all awkward on the contrary! The monsters have pizzazz, they are scary and there is no shortage of gore either. The downside is that they mostly appear in the dark, so they are rarely seen in their full glory, but what the hell, horror movies like this are not made anymore and should be appreciated. Story 6/10, Atmosphere 8/10, Gore 7/10, Visuals 7/10, Action 7/10, Suspense 7/10, Humour 0/10. Entertainment 7/10, Scares 4/10.

Sleepless (2017)

Engels Baran bo Odar has gone from smart hackers back to the silly action genre, and he's quite comfortable there. The whole film takes place in a casino revolving around a pissed off Jamie Foxx, his kidnapped son, two cops, a drug dealer, bodyguards, the casino owner and 25 kilos of cocaine. It's got a pretty brisk pace, when it comes to the fights it's very good (the one in the kitchen with the bodyguard is awesome). Surprisingly, there is some R-rated action and an unexpected twist. So a good 70% fun. I'll gladly give a higher rating for the underrated 51%.

Boyka: Undisputed IV (2016)

Engels Hmm so the new Boyka didn't stand up too well with me. Apparently I'm getting tired of arena movies and I'm more into John Wick style action movies. Scott Adkins has a nice swagger, but every fight felt like a carbon copy, like the choreographer came up with one choreography and it was used for the whole movie. It’s the same punches, kicks and turns all the time, and you don’t even look forward to the finale because you know it will look similar to the fight before. The cinematography is clear and the slight level of brutality is welcome, but it was very cold and artificial, so much so that I didn't even scream and I don't plan to see any of the fights again. 60%

Iron Fist (2017) (serie)

Engels Daredevil is the clear winner. I gave up on Jessica Jones after three episodes and I didn't even get into Luke Cage. Iron Fist, however, kept me decently entertained for all 13 episodes. The acting was good even though the main character annoyed me with his opinions at times, but I found the story very engaging and the pacing quite brisk. What I consider a downside is the action, which takes place most of the time in the dark and you can't see anything, even the choreography is quite artificial and not very striking for my taste, for a martial arts series it is disappointing in this respect, there’s no R-rating and the lack of a villain is also disappointing. We know Madame Gao and The Hand from Daredevil, so a Kingpin or Punisher style character was very much missed here. Still, slightly above average.70%

Priťaženije (2017)

Engels I liked Big Russian sci-fi better than Independence Day. The effects are good, the aliens are innovative, the suffocating ending is decent, but there's a bit too much romance for my taste. It was okay to watch though, I wasn't bored. 60%.
