Re:Born (2016)

Engels The anticipated Re:Born is finally in full swing and even though I was slightly skeptical (I don't Japanese action much), this one actually succeeded, but I can't talk about any great enthusiasm either. Story-wise, I was hardly entertained at all and sometimes got lost in who was against who, but the action is definitely interesting and offered something new. It does hurt at times with the camera, which is often too close and there’s plenty of that hated editing, but it wasn't as bad as other films. The main character is really cool, a new Bruce Lee at least in speed. The agility, dynamism and effectiveness with the knife is incredible in places and I loved the duel with the little spade, something I haven't seen anywhere before. Most of the action takes place in the middle of the jungle, and there's only two I think for pure hand-to-hand combat. It's mostly knives and other slashing weapons that are used and it's thankfully pretty bloody too. The finale introduces a new fighting style, but I wasn't too impressed. Technically, it's rather average. I had fun and I think the guys deserve 4 stars for their efforts. 70%

Game Night (2018)

Engels An excellent comedy that is nothing of the American style, avoids clichés and is very smart. Rachel McAdams is adorable, Jason Bateman gives a classically decent performance, and I found Jesse Plemons as the mysterious cop very funny. It's has a great pace, a good idea, decent lines and fine situational humour, nicely dosed twists that get more and more wacky towards the end, and there's also action and a dose of suspense, so for me a lot of great satisfaction and perfect entertainment. I wouldn't be opposed to a sequel. 85%

Gangcheolbi (2017)

Engels I'm satisfied. Jung Woo-Sung is for me the second biggest South Korean star after Lee Byung-Hun, so I'm curious about every new film of his, and this political-warfare spree suited me. Admittedly, it's a mess at times to figure out who is who in the characters, but I'm more concerned with the action and I'm happy with that. It's bloody, the gunfights are gritty, and there's the typically dynamic Korean fighting style, so I can't complain too much. The scene with the mass destruction of civilians especially young girls was very rough but at the same time awesome. A good movie that didn’t bore me. 70%

Askeladden - I Dovregubbens hall (2017)

Engels A perfect fairy tale from Norway and I can't remember seeing anything better since Stardust. There is more or less everything that should be in a fairy tale: a princess kidnapped by a troll, a smug prince, a courageous hero, a witch, a magical map, and a nice mix of Norwegian mythology with some parts filmed in the Czech Republic. I had a lot of fun. 80%.

Ready Player One (2018)

Engels Steven Spielberg is back in form after a very long time and he made a very nice Nerdgasm, which will take you back not only to the 80s and 90s, but also to your childhood, when you played the first game on Nintendo or Playstation. The movie already has potential cult status and we may be in for a new video game movie heyday. Tye Sheridan, the main character, and Olivia Cooke are very likable in both the real world and in Oasis, and the villain bearing the name Nolan is solid as well, which doesn't seem like a coincidence. Graphically it's very good, the action is varied and entertaining (though there could have been a lot more of it). The best of it comes right at the beginning in the form of a race where we're treated to King Kong and a Tyrannosaurus Rex, then there’s really just the grand finale, unless you count some minor action digressions. The references and Easter Eggs are very good, there are plenty of them and it's almost impossible to spot them all on first viewing. This is an enjoyable original film that is fun, brisk and nicely colored, but I would have liked more humor and more crazy action to complete satisfaction. Still, I look forward to a second viewing. 80%

Legenda o Kolovratě (2017)

Engels A nice Russian fantasy film that definitely does not offend. The story didn't draw me in too much, but once the action starts, I was satisfied. There’s blood splattering, the battles are decently filmed, especially the finale and the bear scene are the highlights of the film. So I'm satisfied, but there was still a little something missing for a higher rating. 65%

Everybody Loves Somebody (2017)

Engels I was looking forward to an exotic comedy from Mexico, but what I got was a serious emotional romantic drama in which humor is completely absent. Karla Souza is a beautiful woman and nice to look at, but she classically spends the entire film deciding between her ex-boyfriend and her soon-to-be boyfriend, both of whom are likeable, but it say much to me. For my taste, the film is too much for women and especially for relationships in their 30s and at times it drags. If the film had been set entirely at a wedding, it could have been more entertaining for sure. 55%

Fack ju Göhte 3 (2017)

Engels The third part of the successful Suck Me Shakespeer is unfortunately the weakest and actually useless. The second one spiced up things up by going on a trip, the third one is back at school, but it doesn't have much balls anymore. There are far fewer funny scenes than in the previous installments and I felt like they were running out of ideas, like the movie was made out of a need to make more money. It’s still watchable, Elyas M'Barek is still cool and Gizem Emre is hot. 60%.

Terrifier (2016)

Engels Based on a 2011 short film, it's now a movie, and it's an unbelievably brutal psychotic trip that will delight anyone who's the least bit twisted. Don't expect a sophisticated story, intelligent dialogue, Oscar-winning performances or great technical aspects. Visually, the film is almost repulsive, looking like someone found a dusty VHS tape from the 80s in the basemen, but strangely enough, the film has its charms. It's a film about a mute clown who is sleazy, disgusting, tough, doesn't get along with anyone and kills anyone who comes his way. It's got its chilling and bleak atmosphere, excellent gore with perfect make-up effects. Really only for strong characters with strong stomachs. It's a very disturbing spectacle, uncomfortable to watch in places, but will please fans craving blood and nudity. Since I haven't seen anything like it in a long time, I'll gladly give it a four star rating. 70%.

Nicht mein Tag (2014)

Engels Oh, this is great! The Germans can surprise sometimes and this kidnap road trip suited me. It has an interesting story with a guy robbing a bank and taking a teller hostage, who volunteers to help him, and they have an incredible adventure together. Moritz Bleibtreu is excellent as the robber/kidnapper, a hard rocker who doesn't give a shit and is a joy to talk to, and Axel Stein is a typical wimp, but who turns from a normal decent person into an out of control "animal" in one day? Nicely written characters, great jokes. For me, great fun, balancing between 4 and 5 stars. 85%.
