Summer Camp (2015)

Engels The first trailer for Summer Camp, which appeared a year ago, captivated everyone and it was the most anticipated horror film of the year. Unfortunately, the second trailer appeared and it was quite bland, and once the very mediocre reviews appeared, the excitement slowly diminished. Well, now I know that the fears were justified. Visually the film is okay, it has a decent pace, but the gore is minimal, apart from the drill scene I don't actually remember another gore scene, which is unforgivable from a potential candidate for the carnage and ride of the year. The infected also scream until it tears your ears, so we end up with a mediocre demon chase that's okay to watch, but had a hell of a lot more potential. On the plus side, at least it has a satisfying ending. 60%

Jason Bourne (2016)

Engels The weakest Bourne and perhaps the biggest disappointment of the year. A lot of people complain about the weaker story, but I wouldn't mind it so much in the action genre, but it is so unbelievably bland, everybody is constantly dealing with something (from the past, present, future) and you don't really know what you're walking into and that's problem number one: grabbing attention and pulling you into the plot. I thought I would at least enjoy the actors and the action and unfortunately I was wrong there too. Matt Damon looks tired the whole movie and like he doesn't really enjoy the role, Tommy Lee Jones is an old dog and could be done with acting, he has nothing to offer, Vincent Cassel as the main bad guy is only in the movie for maybe 25 minutes, especially at the end, we don't learn his name and the only thing he says in the film is “Copy That”, a disappointment. The only bright spot is the beautiful and bright Alicia Vikander, who in two years has moved into the female acting elite. The action is a big stumbling block, too. On the one hand it is woefully short. two major action sequences and about three short ones, of which only the ending was worth mentioning, with a fabulous car chase and a decent final fight, otherwise everything else is cluttered, choppy, very unexciting and bloodless. Taking into account that I was bored for most of the film, because there can be no question of suspense and fast pace, I came out with one of the weakest cinema visits of the year. Unfortunately, this is a travesty that doesn't even offer a twist. 45%

Independence Day: Resurgence (2016)

Engels The trailer has twice as much power as the film itself. I was very annoyed that instead of walking and attacking aliens there were fighter jets like in Star Wars, which I don't like. I didn't feel any threat or danger, the visual effects, though spectacular were not breathtaking, the music was unremarkable, nobody died classically and I couldn't say I was too entertained either. Disappointing and pretty much a bummer. 40%

47 Meters Down (2017)

Engels Two nice ladies on vacation in Mexico end up trapped in a small cage at the bottom of the ocean with the oxygen running out and a shark around them. Decent idea, nice visuals. Two characters, lots of tension and thick atmosphere and most importantly a live shark (no digital crao) that manages to scare the viewer decently and definitely makes you respect it. There's not a lot of blood, but in the there is some. Satisfaction and if you like animal survival movies you should not not miss it. Story 5/10, Atmosphere 7/10, Gore 4/10, Visuals 7/10, Action 7/10, Suspense 7/10, Humour 0/10. Entertainment 7/10, Scares 5/10. 70%

Central Intelligence (2016)

Engels My favorite duo The Rock and Kevin Hart duo and a proven comedy director? That's just a great move. Hart plays his standard, he's funny and rightly wry but the surprise is The Rock, he enjoys his role immensely, it's almost unbelievable that a guy like a mountain, former wrestler, can make fun of himself like that, and even if he overacts at times, he entertained me greatly. The situational humour is hilarious and the action is imaginative, so a happy four. 75%

Stranger Things (2016) (serie)

Engels This year's smash hit, which made such an impression that it surpassed even Game of Thrones in the rankings, and the fact that it's actually being directed by a pair of rookie brothers who have only made a small horror film called Hidden is perhaps a miracle. At first I was worried that Stranger Things would only be appreciated by those who grew up in the 80's, luckily I was wrong, even a modern viewer can love the series. The main characters are children, who are not very cute on the surface, but they win you over after two episodes and you you are experiencing the adventure with them. The best and most mysterious character is Eleven, who for me is the most emotional component of the series and probably the best child actor performance in the last 10 years. I also really liked the character of the Sheriff. The whole series is strongly mysterious, enigmatic, dark, surprising, shocking, suspenseful, moving and at times breathtaking. (For the first time, perhaps I'm praising something other than gore). A very enjoyable journey and an adventure well worth the 8 hours! It is, in fact, the best horror event of the year. Story 10/10, Atmosphere 10/10, Gore 3/10, Visuals 8/10, Action 7/10, Suspense 8/10, Humor 6/10. Entertainment 9/10, Scares 0/10. 90%.

Gokseong (2016)

Engels A acclaimed Korean affair that has rocked festivals, cinemas and audiences from an acclaimed director who has made brutal thrillers like The Chaser and The Yellow Sea and strikes again. The Wailling is perhaps a mix of all genres from horror (there is exorcism, gore, contagion, virus) with elements of comedy, crime and thriller, and surprisingly it works. As a downside I see the running time of 156 minutes, which is considerably excessive, but thankfully boredom doesn't happen. There are fantastic scenes, strongly atmospheric and dense, the uncomfortable stuffiness is simply in the air, but I was expecting a bit more gore given the hype and the director's experience, and I didn't find the finale intense enough to chop me up and feel excited. But it's still a high quality film, solidly directed and imagined. If you like Korean filmmaking, don’t miss this one. Story 8/10, Atmosphere 8/10, Gore 5/10, Visuals 7/10, Action 4/10, Suspense 6/10, Humor 3/10. Entertainment 6/10, Scares 0/10. 75%.

Trivisa (2016)

Engels Although the trailer looked promising, the film itself passed me by in an arc that made me puzzled by the praise. I wasn't entertained, I was bored, the action was almost non-existent, two plus points for a minor brutal scene and a the fairly good visuals. A gangster/non-ganster, anthology/non-anthology movie, I don't even know what they were trying to say. 35%.

X-Men: Apocalypse (2016)

Engels Probably the weakest of the X-men movies, but it's still good fun. I was struck by the rather dull visual effects, the weaker action and the not very interesting new X-men, but I found some positives here. Quicksilver steals the movie for himself again with his amazing scene, I was also intrigued by the connection to Egypt and the villain, even though he's all CGI, was quite respectable. Only a strong 3* this time, I almost didn’t enjoy the finale. 69%

Scare Campaign (2016)

Engels A low-key and unusual slasher from Australia that's worth a watch. Scare Campaign is a popular Prank TV show that scares its victims, but one day they will pay the price. The film has some pretty fresh twists throughout, impresses with solid gore and thanks to the sweet 80 minute running time, it goes by pretty quickly, though at first I found the film boring. Story 5/10, Atmosphere 5/10, Gore 7/10, Visuals 6/10, Action 7/10, Suspense 6/10, Humor 3/10. Entertainment 6/10, Scares 0/10. 65%.
