Daredevil - Karen (2018) (aflevering)

Engels One of the best and most poignant episodes of the third season of Daredevil, and ironically the main character is barely there at all. The dramatic probe in the form of a kind of flashback into Karen's rather dark past is impressive and appropriately dramatic.

The Color of Money (1986)

Engels A film full of life's wisdom and truths of the universe we live in, cleverly, intelligently and Hollywood-ishly wrapped in pop culture garb acceptable to the masses. Eighties mainstream, but offering something a bit more than just light entertainment, from a very interesting and novel billiards environment. Paul Newman as a legend teaching Tom Cruise as a rookie. Who would have thought back then that Cruise would maybe outgrow him in real life.

The Devil All the Time (2020)

Engels A compelling story from the Midwest full of murderers, perverts, paedophiles and other scum, with normal and sane people popping in here and there. An intense, but slowly flowing tension that benefits mainly from first-class performances (Skarsgård, Pattinson), an impressive and unpredictable script and the fearlessness of the filmmakers to surprise the viewer at times, even shock a bit here and there. Without unnecessary exhibitions like Tarantino, but similarly cleverly structured, and engaging for both the ambitious viewer and the layman.

Daredevil - Revelations (2018) (aflevering)

Engels An interesting story twist delivered in a striking, clever and surprising way. On the other hand, the situation around the past of Matt’s parents is already boring and tedious. Hopefully, the next episodes and the finale will revolve primarily around Wilson Fisk and his spiderweb.

The Importance of Being Earnest (2002)

Engels A light-hearted conversational film and a bit of a parody of the big production costume dramas of the past about fatal love, unspoken emotions and other great customs and habits of that time. Charming actors and funny moments are marred by a light stereotype and too much buffoonery at times. Fortunately, the runtime doesn’t bring the film to its knees.

Target Number One (2020)

Engels A TV movie that has bright moments in the form of unglamorous actors and Hartnett, which surprisingly doesn't feel static, but the plot structure and especially the pacing of the story about drug addicts is half documentary-like (handheld camera) and half told like a dodgy fairytale. I'm sure there are clouds of better films with similar themes where the viewer doesn't start looking suspiciously at their watch after an hour.

Daredevil - Upstairs/Downstairs (2018) (aflevering)

Engels A verbose episode with a kick-ass Karen vs Fisk conversation and of course a finale that was kind of predictable a few episodes back thanks to the chemistry and proper interaction.

The Playbook - José Mourinho: Levensregels van een coach (2020) (aflevering)

Engels A short, not very revelatory, but quite entertaining documentary about the legendary coach, who is shown as a controversial guy in his early coaching days, a skilled manipulator and certainly a very interesting person from whom anyone can take inspiration when it comes to working with people. Focused, brisk, not too comprehensive. Alright for 35 minutes.

Daredevil - Aftermath (2018) (aflevering)

Engels Interestingly conceived manipulation of the FBI agent by Fisk, but otherwise it's mostly drawn out nothing. Foggy and Karen are just there to live up to their characters and somewhere along the way there is a use for them that at least makes some sense.

Daredevil - The Devil You Know (2018) (aflevering)

Engels A top notch fight between good and bad Daredevil. But you’ll probably won’t remember anything a week later.
