Lukas & Abel: Vleugelbroertjes (2015)

Engels At first glance, it's a pretty ordinary film, which is really just about a boy finding his pet in the wilderness. However, that pet is an eagle, and the story is sometimes presented almost like a documentary, with some camera sweeps over the mountains being absolutely captivating. I also have to mention the work with animals. It's incredible by today's standards.

Batman: Return of the Caped Crusaders (2016)

Engels I hate stories where a positive character, even one like Batman, becomes a negative character just to create another story. But it has to be said that the dubbing by Adam West, Burt Ward, and others just made me nostalgic for this one, as did the processing and sound effects in the various fights. It has a nice atmosphere, which is probably not appreciated by those unfamiliar with the original series.

Cast Away (2000)

Engels A classic tale of Robinson Crusoe, brought to life in a captivating spectacle, with the main highlight of this Zemeckis film being the performances. The story itself isn't particularly innovative, it's just sometimes well-spiced - like with the toothache, for example. It’s one of those films where I felt it could have ended about twenty or thirty minutes earlier, but no, they had to tack on another three endings.

The Cotton Club (1984)

Engels Francis Ford Coppola must be credited for capturing the era and jazz atmosphere excellently in this film, combined with essentially a classic mafia movie. It’s so classic that the story itself doesn't particularly stand out, and its highlight is mainly Richard Gere and his acting and musical abilities.

Dorchester's Revenge: The Return of Crinoline Head (2014)

Engels Dollface easily ranks up there with the very bad horror films you find at almost every turn. Unfortunately. It doesn't work as a slasher, and it doesn't work as a fun film either, although it's true that here and there you can find some pretty good jokes. Perhaps that's why I decided not to give a complete zero, but just slightly more. It's not hilarious, but it's not completely hollow either.

Brooklyn's Finest (2009)

Engels If it weren't so unnecessarily dragged out, I might enjoy it, but in this case, I just felt like a parade of characters was passing before me, with only the one played by Richard Gere feeling truly interesting. The final massacre is pretty cool, but that's kind of it. Excellent actors in an average to below average film.

De gebroken pijl (1950)

Engels James Stewart is simply such a great actor that you'll believe in him even as a guy trying to broker peace between the whites and the Apache. The script may be somewhat cliché by today's standards, with non-Native Americans playing Native Americans, but it still carries a message and, most importantly, features a great hero in the lead role whom I enjoyed watching, and it didn't offend me in the slightest.

Bound (1996)

Engels Andy and Larry - or Lana and Lilly, as you prefer - the Wachowskis knew how to make movies, and at the beginning of their career, it's quite evident. Bound doesn't have a script that is full of twists and turns and unexpected events, but it flows at a great pace and easily pulls you in with its interesting actors.

Born to Be Wild (2011)

Engels Finally a film that was made specifically for IMAX and has a little more purpose than just showing animals in pretty pictures. In this case, there is even a message, that, while at times too literal and a bit naive, shows what can be done to save certain species.

Cleopatra (1934)

Engels A classic story in an even slightly older version than its most famous version with Elizabeth Taylor. It's black and white, sometimes very grandiose, other times quite intimate. Here, the creators of the younger version took inspiration and made it even more spectacular. It’s good, but it's really just a historical romantic drama and not much else.
