When I found out that Tim Burton was going to join forces with Christoph Waltz and that two songs by my favourite Lana Del Rey were to be featured on the soundtrack, I couldn't wait. In the end, however, I am not happy with Big Eyes. The story wasn't bad, and neither were the performances, but I found it kind of bland, and it definitely could have had more of a bang. Maybe I was expecting too much, and the final product left a mediocre impression on me. One of many biopics that unfortunately doesn't stand out from other films like it, which is a shame considering the director's name, the cast and the premise.

Insurgent is in many ways similar to Divergence, so my viewing experience was more or less comparable for both parts. The second part is a bit more mature, more drastic and more rebellious, but even so, the relationships between the characters come to the surface again, balancing out the rebellious side of the film. Many claim that this is a poorer sibling to The Hunger Games, but I like both series equally, so I'm satisfied. In short, a decent continuation of a story set in a post-apocalyptic era that offers one more look at society and people in the future.

A very daring film that tries to show the audience what the situation and perception of paedophiles in the Czech Republic is like.The film also looks inside the main character Daniel, who is not afraid to show his face explicitly and decides to express himself on this sensitive issue. The film's approach to the subject attempts to break down the myths of paedophiles as "elderly, sleazy men lurking in the bushes somewhere in the park, waiting for innocent young victims to be abused, raped and eventually killed", which is suggested by the final form and concept, but it does not, however, lean towards a version in which paedophiles are to be pitied and regarded as some kind of victim of today's society. It is up to each viewer how they can deal with the subject matter and form their own opinion. In short, a film that definitely deserves attention, even if it is highly controversial in content.

An animated short to Kenneth Branagh's Cinderella, in a similar vein to the feature-length Frozen. Although the theme song falls short of the amazing "Let It Go", it's still something to watch, and besides, who doesn't love little snowmen.

If someone ever asked me what Walt Disney's classic Cinderella looks like, which I haven't seen yet, I would answer that it's just like this version by Kenneth Branagh, but in animated format, because that's how I imagine it. To many, this latest film adaptation may come across as a cheesy and infantile piece, a silly and colourfully overstuffed version of the famous fairy tale, but I really liked the look. So I was left to ride on the innocent relationship between Ella and the prince and the highly stylized visuals, which stood out most in the sets and costumes, which were a joy to look at. And I have to say that the small role for Helena Bonham Carter as the Fairy Godmother was great and incredibly funny. A gorgeous and flamboyant fairy tale feast for the eyes that was truly worth going to the cinema for.

"Don't judge a book by its cover" or "A stellar cast is not always a guarantee of a quality film", as I found out with this musical that absolutely failed to live up to the expectations raised by the trailer. Overall, I found it kind of silly and goofy, but in a bad way, and to be honest, I can't think of a standout song that stuck in my head, which is pretty much a problem with a film of this genre. In short, a film that enticed with a pretty cover, but in most ways only delivered disappointment.

Kingsman is the ultimate action-packed, fast-paced and funny spectacle that kept me incredibly entertained from start to finish, thanks to a great script, a lot of WTF (and other) scenes and a very good cast. This film, which makes fun of (not only) Bond movies, while not coming across as some cheap and weak-minded parody, deserves both thumbs up from me. In short, a very good piece of filmmaking that keeps the viewer in the seat for two hours, with plenty of worthwhile material to discuss at the end of the screening.

An enjoyable short screened before Big Hero 6, in which a dog tries to bring his owner and his ex-girlfriend together in his own way, even though at the beginning the relationship didn't seem to suit him very well. In short, a story about canine but also human love (not only for food), in which compromises must sometimes be made.

After the Oscars, I couldn't miss the Big Hero 6, so I headed to the cinema to see if the golden statue had landed in the right hands. Personally, I would have handed the Academy Award to How to Train Your Dragon 2, but Big Hero 6 is also an above average film that is both funny poignant and action-packed, something that many of today's animated films that are only aimed at younger audiences sadly lack. I liked the animation and the idea of an Asian version of San Francisco, which also had its own charm. Baymax the robot is an incredibly cute character who won me over right away, as did the other characters in the gang of young scientists. All in all, a quality and well-made animated film that perhaps pushes the envelope a bit too much at times in terms of lessons for the young ones, but it still impressed me a lot and is deserving of the rating.

An absolutely breathtaking drama telling the story of a woman who gradually loses everything she ever had due to an insidious disease. It stands primarily on a very well-written screenplay and a truly amazing performance by Julianne Moore, who manages to take the whole film for herself and the golden statue belongs to her rightfully. Throughout the film we follow a highly erudite woman and her family as they have to deal with Alzheimer's disease, which doesn't choose, but only takes, until one is left a soulless shell with no clue about the world around them. Still Alice is an acting masterclass from one amazing actress and a very compelling look at a disease that is very relevant today. It is a film that is made with remarkable sensitivity, in which the serious scenes are meant to be serious and not sentimental. In short, for the first time in a while a truly well-made and modestly conceived dramatic film that definitely deserves attention and appreciation.
