Hoe ver ga je om mooi te zijn? Helemaal tot in Oost-Europa als je het aan dit Vlaams gezinnetje vraagt. Het desbetreffend ziekenhuis specialiseert er in experimentele mensenproeven om de wereld “een mooiere plek te maken” (dixit hun flyer). Maar je weet dat over smaken en kleuren… in Oost-Europa staat schoonheid blijkbaar gelijk aan een zombie-apocalyps! Met deze eerste Vlaamse zombiefilm serveert Lars Damoiseaux je een avond om vingers en duimen bij af te likken: denk Kardashians in een Slavische discount-variant op ER en 28 Days Later. Jammie! Met andere woorden, een film die eruit springt in het Belgisch audiovisueel landschap en die hopelijk heel wat andere regisseurs en regisseuses besmet. De bestanddelen van het virus? Een sterke Vlaamse cast, een bloederige zombiewereld met een vleugje science-fiction, een stevige portie humor en als kers op de taart een sprankeltje liefde. Ben je klaar om geconfronteerd te worden door een ijzige Clara Cleymans in dokterspakje, een Maaike Neuville met een extra maatje en grappige acteerprestaties van Bart Hollanders en Tom Audenaert, zoals we dat van hen gewoon zijn? This nourishing Belgian gore-fest is set in an Eastern European hospital, to which a woman comes for breast-reduction surgery, accompanied by her boyfriend, who resembles a younger Josh Brolin. Yummy is comical, sometimes dumb, occasionally funny and properly bloody entertainment with a brisk rhythm. The characters are average, but that’s offset by the level of zombie material and brutality. For a directorial debut, Yummy is a well-made, exuberant movie.

A nice bloody zombie killing spree set in a Belgian hospital. A young couple travel to a shabby hospital specializing in plastic surgery. The protagonist would like to reduce her overly large breasts, but instead of surgery they will be fighting for their lives against blood thirsty zombies. I was a bit bothered by the actors, who perform rather poorly and the fact that they speak English just makes the whole thing worse, but fortunately the horror is action-packed enough, the make-up effects are good, the gore is substantial and there's plenty of it; there's even some nudity, so as an entertaining romp Yummy works more than well. Too bad the humour rather passed me by and it's not really suspenseful or atmospheric either, but considering this is probably my first horror film from Belgium, I'll be nice. Darwin Awards: The Movie, or if the characters would just close the door behind themselves, there would be no zombie apocalypse. Then again, it is actually refreshing to watch the slaughter of a bunch of assholes and idiots instead of the usual good guys and innocent victims. Nevertheless, a lot more could have been made of the environment of a questionable plastic-surgery clinic, as well as of the characters themselves.

It took me a while to decide on how to rate this mixture of genres, but I finally settled on two stars. It didn’t really work for me as a horror film, and there wasn’t enough humor for a comedy (despite all the effort). The filmmakers obviously didn't even try to pretend that it wasn't a B-movie (which I appreciate). On the other hand, it's true that the quality slipped even lower at times. Anyway, I've seen worse.
