Zittend bij het kampvuur vertelt Serigne, een jongen uit Dakar, aan zijn twee vrienden het verhaal van zijn zeereis als verstekeling. Niet alleen hij, maar iedereen in zijn omgeving lijkt continu bezig te zijn met de gedachte om de oversteek te wagen. Zijn woorden galmen na als een zwaarmoedig gedicht. Een verhaal over jongens die doorlopend op reis zijn: tussen verleden, heden en toekomst, tussen leven en dood, geschiedenis en mythe. Regisseur Diop speelde eerder in 35 Rhums. Atlantique is an interesting variation on the “refugee drama” that looks at the stormy sea only from the African coast and through the eyes of those left behind by the refugees. It is both a fragile, poetic melodrama and a mystery with almost horror-style scenes. The film has value due to its creative approach and authentic insight into an unexamined culture, life and place in which none of us would want to live, but whose inhabitants feel, want and need everything as much as we do. This is a small, quiet festival film that unassumingly and modestly gets under your skin, with a longing to be remembered.
