Marie (Charlotte Rampling) en Jean (Bruno Cremer) zijn al zo'n 25 jaar getrouwd. Ze hebben een gelukkige relatie en gaan al jaren naar hun zomerhuis in Les Landes. Wanneer zij de eerste dag naar het strand gaan, duikt Jean direct in zee. Marie ontwaakt na enkele uren uit een middagdutje en bemerkt dat Jean nog steeds niet terug is. Zij waarschuwt de kustwacht, maar een uitgebreide zoektocht levert niets op. Maanden later lijkt het alsof Marie haar oude leven weer heeft opgepakt. Maar snel is duidelijk dat Marie de verdwijning van Jean niet kan accepteren. Marie doet net alsof er niets is gebeurd en Jean nog steeds bij haar is. (Cinemien)
