Sheila Hancock speelt de tachtigjarige Edith Moore (Edie), een bittere, eigenwijze Engelse dame. Na de dood van haar dominante man George en door de steeds slechter wordende relatie met haar dochter, besluit ze haar jeugddroom na te jagen. Ze vertrekt halsoverkop naar de Schotse Hooglanden om daar een berg te beklimmen. Onderweg ontmoet ze Jonny, een jonge man die haar helpt met het aanschaffen van de juiste uitrusting en die haar traint om de berg te kunnen beklimmen. Ze kletsen, ruziën, maken lol en onthullen steeds meer over hun leven aan elkaar. I usually award similar life stories with the full amount of stars, but in this case I wasn’t very happy about the ending, which was too pathetic for my tastes. But the story and the environment definitely deserve the audience’s attention. The creators shot a movie about a grandma who sacrificed her whole life to her husband, and after his death decided to climb one of the most demanding peaks of the Scottish Highlands. Alright, maybe ‘peak’ is a bit of an exaggeration, as Silven is only 700 m high. But it’s still a steep hill rather far north, so the climate there is quite harsh, with a lot of strong wind. We must also take into account that it’s located quite far from the nearest road. I liked the premise, the camera and the Scottish mountain locations. The film had its charm. The grandma was rather annoying in the beginning, but turned into a champ who managed the impossible. Such life stories deserve respect.
