Ierland 1916. Tijdens de Paasopstand slaat de Britse militie de Ierse rebellen neer. De Ier Michael Collins wint hierna aan macht en populariteit. Hij meent dat een onzichtbaar leger de oplossing is om de Britten een slag toe te brengen. Door steeds met een kleine groep aan te vallen, kunnen de Britten die groter in aantal zijn, de pijn pas voelen, in zijn ogen. Hij weet echter ook een bijdrage te leveren aan de onderhandelingen, al moet hij dit met de dood bekopen. (Warner Bros. Pictures)

There have been several films about the IRA, its issues, and history, from modern interpretations dealing with the situation from a few years ago to older ones describing its formation and the personalities that directly influenced its history and events. Michael Collins falls into the second category, but thankfully, it lacks the excessive starchiness and arrogance that often appear in movies of this kind (the great hero type). Liam Neeson plays a significantly younger character, but he is charismatic and believable enough, his performance is quite impressive (of course, thanks to the work of director and screenwriter). The costumes and production design are excellent (as expected from the great Neil Jordan), and the almost complete absence of pathos is surprising. The large war sequences are relatively believable within the possibilities, and I would have been more satisfied if there was a bit more emotion (...pathos...), but that's simply a matter of personal taste.
