Compassion, empathy, a sense of justice; these are characteristics we associate with mankind. We believe these are the faculties that separate us from animals. The documentary How Animals Feel shows us that, even in this sense, we are not that different from animals. The stars of the documentary are chimpanzees, crows, pigs and rats. In the course of the film ethologists, scientists who study animal behaviour, present experiments conducted in both laboratories and the natural environment in various parts of the world. The animals surprise the scientists more and more with their behaviour. Sometimes, they need to collaborate to finish a task, other times they need to exhibit tolerance and selflessness. Reading emotions from a human face is straightforward not only for dogs, but also for instance pigs. However, even this science has its limits. We cannot say what animals feel or really think about us by studying their behaviour. But the ethical impact is clear. How can we reconcile ourselves with the fact that some animals are a regular part of the human diet, while others are not? (Academia Film Olomouc)
