Irma, now a servant girl coming from a village, is in love with Cseke Balázs, a mechanic's assistant. Irma is expecting Balázs's child. She refuses to have an abortion, although she is asked by Balázs to do so. The young man abandons the girl, and is literally revealed when he is called up as a draftee and is sent to the front, which exempts him of his responsibilities. Irma returns to her parent's place, but her father cannot put up with his feeling of shame, therefore he expels both his daughter and her baby from the house. Balázs is trapped by remorse on the Russian front when he sees a woman clutching her dead baby. He cannot his abandoned lover and her baby off his mind. He decides to marry Irma, and is off on leave to get married. Right before his return home, he loses his vision in a battle. Having returned home, he can caress his son's little hands but will never be able to see him. (officiële tekst van distribiteur)
