Rosa heeft vier kinderen. Ze heeft een kleine supermarkt in een arme wijk van Manilla, waar iedereen haar liefheeft. A poor family that has nothing and makes their living by packaging drugs is captured and financially blackmailed by the police, under the threat of imprisoning the parents. The family must act fast... This incredibly authentic portrait of a poverty-stricken Manila family and the hyena-like corruption of the Philippine capital is almost incomprehensible for a western viewer. The film uses documentary-style camerawork with long takes in authentic locations as though it was not staged with actors. There is no need to rouse emotion with music. Everything in front of the camera is just everyday routine, including the kids doing drugs on the streets. Ma’ Rosa received a 15-minute standing ovation at its Cannes premiere. [Cannes]
