De jonge joodse Joseph (Dorian Le Clech) ontvlucht samen met zijn oudere broer Maurice (Batyste Fleurial) het door de Nazi’s bezette Parijs om het vrije deel van Frankrijk (Vichy-Frankrijk) te bereiken. De jongens zijn op zichzelf aangewezen en weten dankzij een ongelofelijke dosis moed en vindingrijkheid te ontsnappen naar Nice. De Duitsers trekken echter verder op en de veiligheid blijkt van korte duur. De jongens zullen alles op alles moeten zetten om hun afkomst te verbergen. Hun intense band en de hoop op hereniging met hun ouders en grote broers houden hen staande. Samen kunnen ze de wereld aan. Un sac de billes is gebaseerd op het autobiografische boek van Joseph Joffo die daarin vertelt hoe hij als 11-jarige joodse jongen in Frankrijk de Tweede Wereldoorlog overleefde. (Cinéart Nederland)

How is it that the French, being an unbearable nation in real life, can create so many emotional pieces that are just worth watching and make you want to relive the story along with the actors. A Bay of Marbles is another of these exemplary World War II dramas written by the war itself. With the story so powerful it is hard to believe it actually happened. But it did, and I unsuccessfully tried to manage to hold my emotions together for the whole 110 minutes. A powerful story, beautiful French small-town scenery, interesting and exciting plot. If it had me engaged through the whole movie, I’d give it the 5th star. Nonetheless it is a movie you do not want to miss.

Not a bad movie, but I've seen better ones on the same subject. Plus, I couldn't help feeling like I had seen something like this before and found this to be a fusion of Death of the Beautiful Deer and Divided We Fall. I wasn't bored, but neither was I overly excited about it.
