Het is 1720 en de Grote Noordse Oorlog is voorbij. De 29-jarige vice-admiraal Tordenskjold (held van de Deens-Noorse vloot en een soort rockster-avant la lettre) heeft geen idee wat hij nu wil doen met zijn leven. Hij wil in ieder geval een hond! Scheepsknecht Kold overtuigt hem om op vakantie te gaan, met als argument dat nu de tijd is aangebroken om te gaan settelen en te trouwen. Het blijkt daarentegen een dollemansrit door Denemarken en Noord-Duitsland te worden, vol vrouwen, alcohol, plezier en uiteindelijk een felle strijd met een voormalige Zweedse aartsvijand. Een onverwachts, komisch kostuumdrama en tegelijkertijd het portret van een hechte vriendschap tussen een meester en zijn knecht. Regisseur Henrik Ruben Genz noemde James Dean en Jim Morrison als voorbeelden voor het personage van Tordenskjold en het script is geschreven door Erlend Loe, schrijver van verschillende humoristische boeken en scripts. Rear Admiral Tordenskjold could have been used a lot better comedically. You only need to remember the series The Red Dwarf, where there were several scenes with the alleged Rear Admiral Rimmer, and he actually wasn’t even a rear admiral. I say this because the premise looks really great at first glance and if you were an unbiased viewer, you tell yourself, you could actually laugh quite a bit. But the opposite is true. The Danes handled it more seriously than they should have. You are actually bored during the movie in a way that makes you almost annoyed. The ending proves, however, that the creators from Denmark, so brace yourself and prepare for a tragedy. The Scandinavians are way better at that than at comedies. This film is solid proof of that. It is all the more a pity that a film like this was shot in the Czech Republic because the sets are flawless. The problem is the script that should have turned Tordenskjold into a funny and entertaining caricature and at the same time, it turned him into a slimy weakling who drinks, fucks, and says nothing of any value.

For some reason, I thought it would be a rather daring film, especially for a comedy, but surprisingly, it's not that daring. It's just quite vulgar in places. It's funny at first, but then you are supposed to start believing that it's based on a real event. And it stops being interesting, even fun. The characters aren't bad, but they just can’t carry it the whole time.
