(Warner Bros. Pictures)

Engels It was unbearable at times, but I wouldn't classify this one as a total bust. I'm quite glad I made it to the end, where the main character fulfilled her dream without needing to be paired with someone. I appreciate the positive tone and a certain amount of unpredictability of the plot. (55%) ()

Engels How to Be Single could be labeled as "an unpretentious flick for a relaxing evening where you can just turn yourself off". The biggest portion of entertainment was provided by Rebel Wilson, who was unmissable (thanks to her body proportions). I liked the soundtrack, the film moved along nicely, and the plot wasn't quite so stupidly predictable, so it wasn't too much of a pain in the ass and I was satisfied in the end. All in all, a nicely made romantic comedy with a mostly likeable cast, where you can see how things can be for single people (but don’t have to). ()

Engels I like women, so I’m not too big on movies that portray them as brainless bimbos. I don’t encounter such types in real life, either. The movie might have been saved by the cast, but while Alison Brie and Leslie Mann were okay, Dakota Johnson was unwatchable for me. Unless Rebel Wilson starts wearing longer shirts, she will fall into the same category. The first part was a pure rip-off of He's Just Not That Into You. The comedic scenes were so forced that there wasn’t much to laugh about, and every time Rebel Wilson spoke, a wave of disgust washed over me. The misery wouldn’t be complete without a load of clichés and melodramatic moments. I only made it to the end by summoning all my remaining willpower. ()

Engels It's as if the film were conceived in a detective-like manner, where the protagonist is supposed to figure out what she actually wants in life, only to reveal it in the end in a way that should enable you to understand some fundamental truth about life. I can't help but feel that in reality, it's just empty talk. I guess I haven't been single for too long to appreciate this movie, but for me, it's bad. ()
