What was it like to grow up in Helsinki in the 1980s and 1990s? Generation depicts in a nostalgic tone the life of a generation who started school in 1985. It follows a group of friends budding from the suburb of Merihaka from primary school to adulthood. In adolescence they go to Sunday school, go fishing in the harbour and gawk at immigration. Beauty standards are absorbed from the Miss Universe contest, every day is overcast with unemployment while the youth rally against nuclear power. Cigarettes are alight, and The Rasmus sell out club Tavastia. The film by Ilkka Ruuhijärvi and Ulla Turunen is a lovely coming-of-age story that does not exploit the problems of early adulthood. Ordinary life is seen through the characters' perspective, in scenery surrounded by the tower blocks of Merihaka.
