An old advertisement describes this film as a "cinematographic poem". In early cinema, just about any topic that could not be perfectly captured through narration was considered poetic, so even this shot of the lapping waves was presented to the viewer as something unusual.
Among Alice Guy's films, we find more such contemplative nature scenes, including original footage from the life of bees. (Ji.hlava International Documentary Film Festival)
