At the turn of the 1990s, Hal Hartley was one of the people forming American independent film. In this respect, Trust is one of his most famous works. This original rendering of a melodrama about two outcasts shows what is typical for Hartley's directing: theatrical acting, elegant visual compositions and polished screenplay full of poignant sarcasm - and sensitive poetics with deeper socially-critical dimension at the same time. Engels This is such a strange film, but it manages to get under your skin quite easily with characters that are well-written and realistic, yet caricatured. It's not an uproarious comedy, but still, it's all so nicely turned on its head that you just have to laugh. Or walk away from the film disgusted. I had fun with it. ()
