Het voormalige Noord Amerika staat bekend als het land Panem, waar het regerende Capitol van haar twaalf districten eist dat zij jaarlijks één meisje en één jongen leveren voor The Hunger Games. De 24 door loting geselecteerde jongeren worden gezamenlijk in een gigantische arena gezet, waar slechts één levend uit kan komen. De rest van Panem wordt gedwongen het mediaspektakel live op televisie te volgen… De zestienjarige Katniss Everdeen (Jennifer Lawrence) komt uit district 12, een van de armste districten. Ze weet zichzelf, haar moeder (Paula Malcomson) en zusje Prim (Willow Shields) in leven te houden door illegaal in de bossen te jagen met haar beste vriend Gale (Liam Hemsworth). Maar dan wordt Prim geselecteerd voor The Hunger Games. Katniss twijfelt geen moment en neemt de plaats van haar zusje in. Vanaf dan heeft ze nog maar één doel: overleven tegen elke prijs. Eenmaal in de arena wordt ze geconfronteerd met de moeilijke keuzes die ze daarvoor moet maken. Afwegingen tussen de dood en mededogen, maar ook tussen liefde en leven. (Independent Films)
