Samenvattingen(1)

A contemporary take on the classic Arthur Conan Doyle stories, Sherlock is a thrilling, funny, fast-paced adventure series set in present-day London. Co-created by Steven Moffat (Doctor Who, Coupling) and Mark Gatiss, Sherlock stars BAFTA-nominee Benedict Cumberbatch (Hawking, Amazing Grace) as the new Sherlock Holmes and Martin Freeman (The Office, Love Actually), as his loyal friend, Doctor John Watson. Rupert Graves plays Inspector Lestrade. The iconic details from Conan Doyle's original books remain - they live at the same address, have the same names and, somewhere out there, Moriarty is waiting for them. And so across three thrilling, scary, action-packed and highly modern-day adventures, Sherlock and John navigate a maze of cryptic clues and lethal killers to get at the truth. Sherlock (2010)

Engels What a shame that the series did not end after Season 2, in which case I would have given it five stars. I liked the first two seasons a lot. I was greatly entertained by the story of Sherlock Holmes set in the modern world. However, the quality of Season 3 dropped down to mediocre and Season 4 was just a desperate attempt to make something out of nothing. ()

Season 1 (2010) (S01)

Engels I found Season 1 really enjoyable. It made it clear that Sherlock is no James Bond. The moment the creators switched to a more action-packed mode in the second episode, the magic stopped working and the quality went down. The very next episode that went on at a much calmer pace was actually the best of this season. A good dose of deduction and dry humor worked much better for me than the frantically kicking members of the Chinese mafia. ()

A Study in Pink (2010) (S01E01)

Engels After a long break, I dove back into Sherlock, and boy, am I glad I did. Even though I knew what to expect this time around, the modern twist on the classic tales still thrilled me. Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman nailed it, as always. Action-packed scenes, a dash of suspense, and that quintessential English humor — it's all there, and I couldn't get enough. ()

The Blind Banker (2010) (S01E02)

Engels I was pretty content with this episode, but I've got a few thoughts on it. Personally, I think the creators could've toned down the action a bit — some scenes felt totally unnecessary to me. Like, did we really need that ridiculously overengineered execution scene with the mini-ballista (or giant crossbow)? However, I will say, I missed Mycroft in this one. ()

The Great Game (2010) (S01E03)

Engels This episode brought back everything that was lacking in the previous one. Thankfully, the creators dialed back on the over-the-top action sequences and ancient siege engines, making room for some powerful deduction, dry humor, and a chance for the main antagonist to shine. ()

Season 2 (2012) (S02)

Engels The second episode stood out like a sore thumb between the two excellent ones. It just felt somewhat out of place. I just don’t get it, it seemed as if the creators inhaled something, too, which made them lose focus. Fortunately, I had nothing to complain about in the opening and closing episodes, both were a pleasure to watch, and Season 2 turned out well as a whole (though it could have been better...). ()

A Scandal in Belgravia (2012) (S02E01)

Engels A great kick-off to the second season. I couldn't find any faults in the storytelling (not that I was really looking), the atmosphere was spot-on, and Sherlock, John, and even Mrs. Hudson all added to the quick-paced excitement. Plus, Irene Adler's character was a great move. And to top it off, there was just the right amount of humor, leaving me thoroughly satisfied. ()

The Hounds of Baskerville (2012) (S02E02)

Engels The second episode fell short of my expectations The creators seemed to aim for a horror vibe, but it didn't quite hit the mark for me. The storyline felt forced and overly constructed, leaving me feeling a bit bored at times. ()

The Reichenbach Fall (2012) (S02E03)

Engels Jim Moriarty really went all out this time, shaking things up, and the creators capitalized on it brilliantly. They injected just the right amount of pace and atmosphere into the story, sprinkling in humor and tension for good measure, and the outcome was nothing short of outstanding. ()

Season 3 (2014) (S03)

Engels I wasn’t very pleased with the third season of Sherlock. It struggled to pick up momentum, and I felt like the creators had been slacking off for two years. I can’t praise them for the lousy job they did. The two previous seasons were far more convincing. Season 3 seemed farfetched. Overelaborate plots were solved in even more elaborate ways, Mary Watson's dark past felt terribly forced, so I was grateful for that little bit of a Christmas atmosphere at the Holmes'. ()

The Empty Hearse (2014) (S03E01)

Engels I couldn't shake the feeling that the creators were pushing it with the humor. It felt like I was watching a comedy with a hint of detective work sprinkled in. The constant elaborate explanations of Sherlock's non-death grated on my nerves, and I can't help but think Mark Gatiss is lucky that Annie Wilkes is just a fictional character. ()

The Sign of Three (2014) (S03E02)

Engels It's becoming a pattern with Sherlock seasons: the middle episodes tend to be the weakest link. Here's hoping that holds true this time around, and the final episode of the third season will lift my spirits once more. I've never been a fan of weddings (in movies and in real life); they always feel so dull and tedious to me. Plus, I think I would notice if someone stabbed me in the back. ()

His Last Vow (2014) (S03E03)

Engels The third episode felt like the plot was trying a little too hard to be clever. It's definitely the highlight of the third season, but looking back, I might have been a tad generous with my rating. Some of the ideas felt a bit forced, like they were reaching for something that just wasn't there. 4*- ()

Season 4 (2017) (S04)

Engels In Season 4, I fully appreciated the fact that there were only three episodes per season. Still, I wished the individual episodes had been at least slightly shorter. While Season 3 got out of the creators’ hands, Season 4 was totally off the rails. The writers were obviously clueless, letting skeletons jump out of closets, or introducing completely new but key characters, which was rather cheap. If I were one of the screenwriters for the last three episodes, I would probably feel an intense itching around my ankles, and if a woman told me she was my number one fan, I would immediately pass out. ()

The Six Thatchers (2017) (S04E01)

Engels Talk about turning a stellar series into a full-blown farce. That whole Mary Bond-Watson debacle was wearing thin by the end of the third season, and now it's like they're doubling down on the disaster. That whole aquarium scene was a real facepalm moment. It's a shame, really. 2*- ()

The Lying Detective (2017) (S04E02)

Engels Man, those hallucinogenic scenes just don't do it for me. Whether it's in movies, series, or games (even though I love Far Cry), they always leave me feeling disappointed. But let me tell you, Marty Hopkirk really took the cake for me. I mean, when a character gets killed off, you'd expect them to disappear from the story, right? Not in this case. Marty keeps popping up, creating these far-fetched plotlines that are just downright painful to watch. It's like stupidity is winning over intelligence and cunning. ()

The Final Problem (2017) (S04E03)

Engels I guess the finale was the best episode of this season. But despite its potential, I couldn't bring myself to give it more than two stars, which is a bummer. Sure, it had some intriguing storylines going on, but I couldn't shake the feeling that the creators ripped off Saw. And that whole "God of the East Wind" character felt like a forced addition just to stir things up. ()
