Magdolna, who was formerly Fábián Gyurka's fiancée, marries Palánka Imre. Imre' sister, Mária, falls in love with Gyurka. Traján, the Roumanian village drummer, spreads rumours about her still being in love with Gyurka, wherefore he is hit by Imre. Gyurka has plans to ask Imre for Mária's hand in marriage, but the jealous man drives him away. The hurt and enraged Traján wants to get Imre to prison, but the embittered Gyurka gives himself up instead of him. When Imre learns this, he wants to pay Gyurka's way out of prison, but by that time Gyurka has escaped. The returning Imre finds Gyurka in his wife's company, and mis-understanding the situation, attacks him. During their fighting, Gyurka falls into an abyss. Traján has Imre placed under arrest, but he escapes, aided by Magdolna. Misunderstandings are eventually resolved, Imre and his wife make peace and at the wedding party of Gyurka and Mária even Traján sees Hungarians in better light. (officiële tekst van distribiteur)
