Taking a novel approach to the standard Holocaust documentary, filmmaker Marek Tomasz Pawlowski gives his subject, Henryk Schonker, free rein to ruminate on his boyhood in the Polish town of Oswiecim—or, as the Nazis called it, Auschwitz. Bits and pieces are marshalled to illuminate Schonker's story—still photos manipulated, events reenacted—of how his father, a leader in the Jewish community, was charged with establishing a bureau for emigration to Palestine. His plan was presented to Eichmann but of course never implemented, and the result was the death of millions. (Denver International Film Festival)
