In het Pine Ridge Reservaat in de staat South Dakota wonen Matho (LaDainian Crazy Thunder) en Bill (Jojo Bapteise Whiting), twee Oglala Lakota jongens. Bill is een 23-jarige jonge man en vader van twee kinderen bij twee verschillende vrouwen. Ondernemend als hij is, ziet Bill overal een kans om aan geld te komen, bijvoorbeeld met het fokken van poedels. Tijdens een van zijn betaalde klusjes ontmoet hij Tim (Sprague Hollander), een rijke kalkoenhouder die een ranch heeft net buiten het reservaat en Bill een baantje aanbiedt. Ondertussen kan de 12-jarige Matho niet wachten om volwassen te worden en wil hij vooral gezien worden door zijn vader, die drugsdealer is. Diefstal, drugsdealen met zijn vader’s voorraad, Matho en zijn vrienden werken zich steeds in de nesten. Hoewel Matho en Bill elkaar niet kennen, kruisen ze elkaars pad en blijken ze veel met elkaar gemeen te hebben. (Cherry Pickers Filmdistributie)

I don't see anything revelatory or interesting in this film at all, although the reviews suggested that it would be one of the more substantial screenings of the festival. An ordinary American indie, the kind we get dozens of every year, which after a few months, when they have passed through the festival circuit, nobody remembers anymore. And just after the screening of the Czech BANGER., I guess I wasn't in the mood for any more badass drug dealers. The only thing I would acknowledge is that Jojo Bapteise Whiting is a likeable guy and an acting revelation. (56th KVIFF)

A believable, very human immersion into the world of young modern Sioux who are still searching for their place in the world decades after their ancestors were irrevocably uprooted. It's beautifully put together, remarkably acted and I understand what it's trying to say, yet I must cynically add that it simply lacks the pull at the gate that would have got me as a viewer in the finale. I was a little worried that it would be an endless and boring movie. The opposite is true. I hated all the characters at first and eventually grew to like them. It's a film about finding values and starting points that are not familiar to Europeans. The story is really beautiful and shot so realistically that you want to follow the characters and help them, even though they are quite stubborn. Movies set in rural America tend to be slow and revolve around similar themes, but this is an absolute blast that guarantees a rush of emotion and entertainment.
