Malibu Shark Attack (2009) (Tv-film)

Engels When the horror, thriller, or sci-fi genre doesn't work, adding comedy to the mix might actually make Mega Shark of Malibu work. When it comes to horror I want to be scared, with a thriller I want to be almost breathless with suspense, and with science fiction, I want to marvel at the mysteries of the universe. I didn't feel any of those things while watching this film, and I just had to chuckle at times at the incredibly stupid script. (20%)

L'Amant double (2017)

Engels Double Lover is another one of François Ozon's films that I'm not quite sure how to feel about. The unsettling atmosphere with a hint of mystery and irrationality drew me into the story, but I could certainly have done without the excessive eroticism. The nudity seemed pointless in places, as it didn't move the plot along. And in the end, that twist about the twins was just confusing all over again. It certainly did not lead to a satisfactory resolution. (60%)

To Walk Invisible: The Bronte Sisters (2016) (Tv-film)

Engels I watched this movie three times and fell asleep after about half an hour each time. Fortunately, I didn't give up and watched it for the fourth time today. I must have been very tired before because now the story of the fate of the Brontë sisters captivated me and even moved me by the end. I would like to highlight the great acting performances of most of the actors and the absolutely believable rendering of the period realities, including the costumes. (75%)

The Other Lamb (2019)

Engels Visually, there is nothing to criticize about The Other Lamb. The unsettling atmosphere that accompanies the action also has something to it. However, the behavior of most characters is so irritating that I just can't get past it somehow. (45%)

Fifty Shades Darker (2017)

Engels I can't help it, but I've somehow stopped enjoying admiring Jamie Dornan's perfect body and listening to the good soundtrack. It would also need to develop the story a bit more, which underwent almost no changes compared to Fifty Shades of Grey. I was really bored this time. And one more little thing... I searched in vain for the darkness mentioned in the title of the film. (45%)

Snowden (2016)

Engels "I think I'm free because I don't have to worry about tomorrow. I'm happy with what I've done today." - When watching Snowden, anyone with a modicum of judgment has to realize what a fucked up world we live in. Oliver Stone handled the highly publicized scandals with dignity. His film is quite a clear and in many ways disturbing statement about the state of contemporary society. (85%)

Babylon Berlin - Season 3 (2020) (Seizoen)

Engels I must admit that the somewhat fragmented third season of the otherwise excellent German series Babylon Berlin was a bit disappointing. Enticed by the detailed story of the first and second seasons, my expectations were probably too high. Aside from the more banal detective plot, I was also disappointed that the romantic sparks between Gereon Rath and Charlotte Ritter suddenly seemed to vanish, so there wasn't much development in that regard either. Even musically it was weaker this time. It's a good thing that at least the impressive period atmosphere was preserved, and everything finally culminated appropriately in the ominous last episode. Fuga (2018)

Engels The psychological drama Fugue is a deeply disturbing film about finding oneself after memory loss. The nonlinearly told story with a touch of horror keeps the viewer in a state of permanent suspense. The pervasive and largely elusive mystery is intensified not only by the naturally escalating music but also by the completely unpredictable plot. The provocatively naturalistic performance of the lead actress is also certainly worth noting. (75%)

La quietud (2018)

Engels It is not a cinematic miracle, but I would disagree with the opinion that The Quietude is like a soap opera. It's far from that. Pablo Trapero directed a quite decent drama, centered around the emotionally charged relationship between two sisters, reflecting their mother's differing approach to each of them, rooted deeply in the family's past. The prolonged separation also plays a role, greatly distressing Mia, who lives under the dominance of her mother. (60%)

Dogman (2018)

Engels Who would have guessed at the beginning that antagonizing the gunman Marcello could have fatal consequences? The submissive good-natured Dogman didn't exactly have an easy time, but in a way, he brought many of his troubles upon himself. Nonetheless, he also managed to extricate himself from them in the end. Italian director Matteo Garrone made an excellent social drama, which has several strong and very unpleasant scenes. The great Marcello Fonte, who plays the title role, captivated me so much with his authentic performance that there was very little missing for me to give the film five stars. (85%)
