Princezna zakletá v čase (2020)

Engels Effort is appreciated. But the initial half-hour that I had to literally sacrifice for the Princess Cursed in Time to start doing something more interesting was extremely long and annoying. The rest of the film, however, had a likable fantasy spark (unfortunately brought down by something every now and then) and I was pleased with the civility of the main characters. Unfortunately, the plot was less pleasing, including the obligatory "what, who, when and why" and some completely unnecessary side characters. Before the theatrical release, the relentless marketing of the Princess Cursed in Time almost made the film into a Hollywood spectacle, but nothing like that happens, no matter how hard the crew strives to do it.

Kin (2018)

Engels The sci-fi element was a bit unnecessary, but as a result it was one of the most interesting things in this initially promising, later boring and at the end surprisingly entertaining film, which does not offend, excite or rob you of too much time. As for the acting line-up, it's pretty good, the special effects are nice and the shootouts have energy, but the story isn't particularly revealing and it mixes a lot of stuff together.

Promising Young Woman (2020)

Engels A rough patch on a rough bag. If it weren't for the (complete) ending, I would probably be a little happier, but even so, Promising Young Woman surprised me a lot with how thoughtfully, stylishly and often mischievously amusingly Emerald Fennell managed to grasp a topic with which she could just as well have had struggles. Carey Mulligan is perfect (one wouldn't even know she's the same actress as in The Dig) and I was pleased with Alison Brie in her small role.

The Road to El Dorado (2000)

Engels Although the combination of classic and computer animation is a bit outdated or slightly disturbing, the brisk adventure story isn’t outdated. Sometimes it’s a bit of a variation on The Man Who Would Be King, and above all the amazing songs of Elton John, which I think playfully match those of The Lion King. And when the heroes are dubbed by Kevin Kline and Kenneth Branagh, the fun and quality are taken care of. The Road to El Dorado is not a groundbreaking animated film, but it is a great spectacle to watch and listen to.

Relic (2020)

Engels An atmospheric delicacy for patient people. If you enjoyed Hereditary, The Witch or Midsommar from some of the different recent horror movies, be sure to give Relic a chance. It's a intimate story, which at first feels like a family drama, but gradually thickens and, like the old house, growls and squeaks more and more, and elements of something that fully strikes only at the end.

The Best of Enemies (2019)

Engels It's a little too long given that almost nothing happens in the film you would not expect to happen. But on the other hand, the performances by Taraji P. Henson and Sam Rockwell deserve every minute of the runtime, and Rockwell in particular played his C. P. in such a way that you have no problem believing in his rebirth. You understand why he's doing what he's doing and he's not doing it just because the script wants him to. A truly admirable actor.

Army of the Dead (2021)

Engels I know that swearing at Zack Snyder is in vogue now, but remember, track pants were in vogue once, too. For me, Army of the Dead is a completely hassle-free, fun action film with a team of characters who are or less, let's say, equal to the team from Aliens, and it has an interesting story that doesn't make things easy for those characters at all. Ever since the opening credits sequence, which Snyder does great, the film had me in the palm of its hand and didn't let me go. It looks great, it sounds great (I want a complete soundtrack, even a song soundtrack), it's fun and it was more than good enough for me. Only the big screen was missing from it being perfect - man, how great would Army of the Dead be in the movie theater!?

Kanál IV - soukromá televize Luďka Soboty (1990) (programma)

Engels Luděk Sobota and Ladislav Smoljak wrote a parody on the television broadcast of a regime that was recently in the past, but the humor has remained rewarding to this day, and I am glad that Czech Television grabbed this film during one of its dives into the archives. Kanál IV is also interesting because it has well-known scenes in a slightly different presentation - A Moment of Poetry not with Luďek Sobota, but with Roman Skamene and Adriana Sobotová, and at the end Sobota's phenomenal grateful monologue: "last but not least, I want to thank the viewers in the back," is even better than in the later New Year's Eve version. Even the excellent escalating parody of a communist series entertains, and also the (deliberately) desperate Jan Rosák. What I could do without is the song by Eva Hurychová.

Coffee & Kareem (2020)

Engels I read Shane Black instead of Shane Mack as the screenwriter during the end credits... And it didn't stop to make me think, because if it was him, I would believe it. Coffee & Kareem is an undemanding but fresh and brisk comedy, another in a series of buddy movies, but this time with a very entertaining duo. Especially Ed Helms, who recently entertained me in The Hangover, is an excellent, unlucky and a bit of a different cop, and has (not only) comedic talent on the level of Steve Carell. I was also pleased with Betty Gilpin, and it made me want to watch GLOW again right away.

Ex_Machina (2014)

Engels If it was a Black Mirror feature film, I would be fully satisfied, but I probably expected a little more from the non-TV movie, no matter how much I enjoyed it from the beginning to the relatively unexpected end. Alicia Vikander is amazing and shows how you can act using only your face when you know how, Domhnall Gleeson is likeable and I got to know the charismatic Oscar Isaac around the middle of the film. Some of the surprises were expected, some were not, none of it bothered me, and the film reminded me of the good old sci-fi days of Isaac Asimov.
