Kuragehime (2014)

Engels I'm familiar with the source material, both manga and anime, but certainly familiarity like this doesn't affect the rating and overall "digestion" of the film. It's the kind of goofy thing where you just don't know whether to laugh or roll your eyes. Luckily Rena Nōnen made the whole experience enjoyable for me; she really has it in her, I guess it's those peepers of hers that do it. Plus, Masaki Suda is another "teen" I watch and I was pleased with his performance here (he was walking on pins and needles!). We simply get a glimpse into the lives of nerds (played as if they've fallen out of the manga), maybe even fall a little in love, but like everywhere else, we don't get a satisfying result. If you're not in the mood for something wacky, don't even bother watching it. Unfortunately, it felt like a big bore at times – the footage is really overdone. A weaker 3 stars.

Jodžóhan šinwa taikei (2010) (serie)

Engels The anime does have very good animation, the hero and the story don't follow the template; but unfortunately I still didn't enjoy it at all. I almost found it so weird that it became unwatchable for me. Art? I was annoyed by the way the main character kept babbling on and on at mach three speed. If you're not interested in the first three episodes, there's no point in continuing. If you do, you're home, put your feet up and enjoy.

Pazuru (2014)

Engels A bloody romance. A solid critique of society; in a way it reminded me a bit of Kawaki but with a smaller budget, more intimate, and fewer familiar faces. Which doesn't matter, because Kaho and Nomura Shuhei rock. They don't need words, just look at their faces and it's clear exactly what's going on. I think that you have to do a bit of guesswork with this movie to get it all right. I really liked the music, it was absolutely accurate in expressing the feelings of the main characters. Admittedly, what was happening on the roof was a bit much and I thought I'd give it 3 stars because of that, but in the end the raised hands and crazy dancing saved it. This movie is, as the Japanese say, kurutteiru, "insane, twisted, rampage".

Hateu too hateu (2015) (serie)

Engels My big problem with this series is the gopher. I didn't enjoy the nice policeman, his scenes with his colleague annoyed me more than they made me laugh. I don't know why, but apparently the actor didn't suit me, because somehow I was always almost annoyed when I saw him on set. And considering how much of him there was, I guess it's clear why I'm only rating it 3 stars. Because I really liked the rest of it. This time it was the main character (usually it’s a female) who was pretty spoiled and basically "evil" at the beginning. And yeah, I had fun with him. It was almost endearing at times – especially the moments when his "spoiledness" interacted with the heroine, who didn't give in. I liked the central couple a lot. That's why I lived with them and all their pain from the second half of the series onwards. Although the series is brimming with clichés, it tackles them in a non-clichéd way, to the point of completely cupping them to pieces – colds, anyone? But don't faint! A couple has a problem, suspecting the other of infidelity? At last, it's resolved by sitting down together and talking it out! I loved all those realistic aspects of it. Even the main character is not stubborn and tries to solve his problems with the help of someone else. Not to mention the music that went along with it made my heart dance. Despite all that, I can't rate it higher because... good cop on the scene (I guess we had bad chemistry, unlike the main couple :-P). However, if you can stand the underling (I know a lot of people loved him), then add a star and have a look. A strong 3 stars.

Ano hi mita hana no namae o bokutači wa mada širanai. (2011) (serie)

Engels Did someone close to you die and it was an accident? It's your fault. Or the survivors' fault or whatever. So let's eat guilt for eleven whole episodes, only to cry at the end, talk it out on the deck, and everything's fine again, everyone's a sunny person again. Menma is annoying, yet everyone loves her – it's only because she hasn't grown up and become a bitch. I thought the best thing about the anime was the ending. I listened to that one every time it played. Then the animation – loved it. Yup, and the rest of it is terrible. Superficial, weepy, going nowhere, stupid. I'm sure there are anime that mourn a dead friend/buddy much better. Even though most of them suck, because this masochistic basking in suffering over the loss of a loved one is almost without exception handled horribly in the Japanese setting. AnoHana is no exception, even though the dead girl does come back dead and happily assists us in the torment (and that's why everyone loved her so much?!). A weak 2 stars.

Šigacu wa kimi no uso (2014) (serie)

Engels Boring, easy to read, even if it looks convoluted, even though I like classical music, here I was minimally interested, all the feelings and gibberish the characters were talking could not, I mean at all, be heard or felt in it. Really, as has been said here, Nodame Cantabile is many times better – in everything. I didn't find any of the characters likeable, the story dragged on like a corpse, it had nothing going for it. A plain grey anime, even though it pretends to be colorful. What was it really about? I mostly remember praying for almost every episode to be over. Still, I finished it. It's watchable, but it's hardly average.

Bakumacu kókósei (2014)

Engels The movie is a terrible stupidity and not above average in any way, or even interesting (in the sense of – yes, I want to see/know this), but I still enjoyed watching it on the whole. Just a simple diversion if you don't want to watch something more challenging and at the same time, despite wanting something simple, you don't want the film to insult your intellect. :-D Absolutely do not expect a thing from it and you won't be disappointed.

Kamisama to iu tóri (2014)

Engels I've been saying it for a long time, and here I have been reassured – Fukushi Sōta really is a bad actor. Considering he's playing the main character here, that's pretty much detracting from the beauty of the thing. Not to mention that I've been praising Kamiki for a long time now about what a good actor he is, and yet he didn't play the psychopath here very convincingly. On the contrary, his "eye-rolling" was laughable. The rest of the cast was very bland. Perhaps the only thing I considered successful were the effects – definitely above average by Japanese standards. I can see what the poet was trying to say (criticism of the young, that is), but it didn't work. Although the murders of all the schoolboys and schoolgirls are depicted quite tastefully, I found them pointless, unnecessary, just for effect. In a story that has no head or heel and is more leaky than my socks. Miike and I really didn't click this time.

The Girl Who Sees Scents (2015) (serie)

Engels Even though it's predictable, it starts to drag a bit around the tenth episode, it's filled with unnecessary cotton wool and full of cliched twists and turns, I enjoyed watching it. After a long time, the two main actors have finally picked up a decent series. Nothing from the OST stuck in my head, the music was below average by Korean standards, and the camera missed the mark at times. Still, the series managed to keep my attention, I laughed out loud a few times (honestly that hasn't happened to me in a Korean series in a long time), the central couple was cute, there was no squealing or hair-pulling, the cops at first looked like buffoons who dropped out of some failed sitcom, but that got better with time and looked more "real". The characters had something to them, and probably that made it more watchable. Plus the antagonist was finally worth it, he wasn't a jerk and was beautifully disturbed. It's just a shame we couldn't have delved more into his soul, it would have certainly been a more interesting excursion than what we'd witnessed in the last two episodes (completely wasted film material). Micky fans should definitely see this. A weak 4 stars.

サムライフラメンコ (2013) (serie)

Engels I haven't seen such a severely underrated series in a long time, I tend to see overrated ones more often than not. This just isn't Shōnen or seinen, this is a beautiful example of sentai. Or the Power Rangers in the animated version. Nothing more, nothing less. And within the genre, it's really well done. Not only does it poke fun at itself, but at the same time we go through all the stages of superheroes with the hero, which basically replicate the clichés of the genre, but are presented in a quite endearing way that you simply enjoy watching it. If you haven't spent at least some enjoyable time with Kamen Rider, it's clear that you won't be digesting this anime either. Masayoshi starts us off from scratch, overcoming obstacles, amassing followers, and fighting all sorts of odds to ultimately triumph, albeit bare-bottomed. Everything makes sense. The characters have their (sentai-esque) depth. Plus, it's just a comedy about a universe that decided to make one fool's dream come true. Pleasantly goofy.
