Game of Thrones - Season 1 (2011) (Seizoen)

Engels I understand the enthusiasm and exaltation of this series. After all the idiotic crime shows like CSI and Cobra 11, this is a fresh, atypical ride through a gritty, mythological medieval period, but one that doesn't forget to use vulgar language, sex, and often cut someone's head off for effect. This blending of the old with the "modern" is cool and confident and there's no denying the great atmosphere, and the fact that the lack of a budget and therefore the absence of juicy, spectacular battles can be forgiven. The characters have depth, and each of them usually plays an important role in the intricacies of the story. It's catchy, although there's that serial aftertaste of drag, but fortunately, the least in a very long time. Giddy-up for the second season.

Game of Thrones - Fire and Blood (2011) (aflevering)

Engels A spectacular ending to the season that captivates with scenes as heroic as they are intimate. It’s one of the few episodes with a minimum of filler, the story has drive and has nothing redundant or gratuitous. The motivations of the characters are clear, unambiguous, the twists are minimal. Things are likely to be more drastic in the coming season.

Game of Thrones - Baelor (2011) (aflevering)

Engels The penultimate episode is full of emotion, an interesting barbarian resuscitation ritual and a gripping finale, probably the most pivotal scene of the entire season and at the same time probably a ruthless indication of where the Game will actually go and how the characters will be dealt with.

Game of Thrones - The Pointy End (2011) (aflevering)

Engels An episode entirely about intrigue and political infighting, spiced up by two attractive minor duels – a fencing teacher and a barbarian warrior. The zombie thread is still taken with a grain of salt, let's see what the writers have planned for it.

Game of Thrones - You Win or You Die (2011) (aflevering)

Engels Exceptional character work, brilliant pulling of strings and intrigue. One of the best episodes so far, if not the best. The ending (the coronation) has incredible intensity and an exemplary build-up of tension, while remaining completely unpredictable.

Game of Thrones - A Golden Crown (2011) (aflevering)

Engels A top-notch episode working primarily with the chapter beyond the Narrow Sea this time, which is compelling in its intensity and naturalism. At the same time, you can feel that things are getting darker and big twists are coming.

Game of Thrones - The Wolf and the Lion (2011) (aflevering)

Engels Amazing episode. Breathtaking scenes of the Erie with the visual opulence of classic big movies, a great duel of Stark vs Lannister and overall a very plot-dense episode where the pieces on the chessboard move forward at a very fast pace. Most of the story revolves around the troubles in the capital, the wilderness part doesn't get any space at all this time. A balanced and thick episode.

Game of Thrones - Lord Snow (2011) (aflevering)

Engels Clearly the weakest episode of the first three without any dominant scene or plot twist. A rather pointless episode, then, which only creates a kind of connective tissue between the rest and brings crystallization rather than a shift in the plot.

Game of Thrones - The Kingsroad (2011) (aflevering)

Engels Intrigues, scheming and moves on an imaginary chessboard. It slightly starts to catch the mores of classic series, i.e. to put the key twist in the last shot, but surprisingly it doesn't lose its pull and you want to know more about the characters.
