The Midnight Sky (2020)

Engels An attempt at intellectual sci-fi, where not much is said, time and life are lightly philosophised about, and the survival at the North Pole, or rather outside a space rocket, is relatively intense. At times pleasantly ambient and pensive, visually impressive, but script-wise mediocre and largely uninteresting science fiction, which not even Clooney can save. In the style of a brooding Solaris or Ad Astra.

Merantau (2009)

Engels Gareth Evans's filmography should ideally be seen chronologically, because that's the way to appreciate his development and progress and the work he has produced. Merantau Warrior is understandably weak in terms of plot, but the perfectly clear and traditionally uncompromising action passages are a sure sign that the potential is enormous. Unlike The Raid, it lacks budget and the A-list profile of an action director. It has its flaws, of course, but on the other hand the raw feeling of Jakarta's gritty outskirts and sometimes very decent fights drives it forward. For a directorial debut, a great, bold and in some aspects a (sub)genre-defining achievement.

Boss Level (2020)

Engels Original, fast-paced, fun. Understandably, it doesn't surpass the conceptually similar Edge of Tomorrow, the plot is too trivial for that, but that was not the intention. Carnahan sets the viewer on a sarcastic note from the start and doesn't take his foot off the gas until the very end, which is appropriately weird. The buffed-up Grillo shows that he can be a pretty likeable dad in addition to a perfect figure, so for daring to take his acting creations a step further, it's definitely a thumbs up. Gibson, meanwhile, plays his grizzled bad-ass standard of recent years.

Greenland (2020)

Engels A very sober and rational view of disaster. Understandably it doesn't have the fun factor of Armageddon or San Andreas, but Greenland surprisingly maintains a high stamp of believability and raw reality most of the time. Too bad about some infuriatingly clichéd scenes (the ending), but thank heavens for the likeable moments that are pleasantly chilling in places and very well acted. Baccarin is surprisingly commanding, Butler is just OK. The pace is great and even though you can see that it's kind of a low budget movie, the filmmakers managed to camouflage it well. Decent and overall smart entertainment.

Peaky Blinders - Season 5 (2019) (Seizoen)

Engels Hands down the weakest season. The technical precision is not enough to cover the dull political plot, where the game is played on bullshit rather than actions, which after a few hours start to become monotonous and after a few more directly irritating. The protagonists seem quite deliberately to look tired and weary, but it is hard to find a rational justification for this. In other words, dramaturgically the fifth season was definitely not very good and giving a high rating primarily because it is Peaky Blinders is not appropriate. Now I hope that there won’t be a Season 6 and that everything will remain open and ambiguous as I would expect.

Peaky Blinders - Mr. Jones (2019) (aflevering)

Engels Decently craftsmanship with the typical elements of a strong finale, though in this case it is the weakest finale of the series. Gone is the grounded and rough crime story, now it's all about elaborate shots of precise set design while the writers conjure up one sophisticated nugget of wisdom after another from the mouths of the characters, but there's already been too much of that in the previous episodes.

Peaky Blinders - The Shock (2019) (aflevering)

Engels Great fascist feeling (and phenomenal speech) and traditionally excellent costumes and production design in a story where you gradually lose any emotional connection to almost all the characters, including the main one. So we're just waiting to see who's gonna get beaten up or whacked.

Peaky Blinders - The Loop (2019) (aflevering)

Engels It's a pity the storyline is so poorly conceived, with politics playing a major role. It has a few rewarding moments, but mostly it's drowning in political tripe that even the exceptionally charismatic cast can't save.

The Greatest Game Ever Played (2005)

Engels Filmed with ease, wit and insight, but not revelatory in any way. The visual gimmicks are downright annoying at times, and the idea of following your dream and overcoming all obstacles has been seen many times before, in a much more soulful and solid form. Shia, though, sets the bar very high for teenage actors.

Peaky Blinders - Strategy (2019) (aflevering)

Engels It's not nearly as well presented in the next episode. The main villain this time is much less fun. It's as if he couldn't evoke the necessary emotions that Sabini, Kimber, or Changretta could.
