Manglehorn (2014)

Engels It's a sad story, and in its finale, beautiful, but its execution is very ordinary. Yes, this is human life, and it can unfold like this, but without Al Pacino, who once again excels and showcases his greatness, it would be an easily forgettable film that you might overlook and not remember in the morning. I give a lot of credit for the acting, though.

Cheery Point (2013)

Engels It looks awfully simple. We'll make a dystopian society by dressing everyone in white and making everyone look emotionless. If he has emotions, it's like a springer, and those we want to get rid of. And that's actually it, moreover without a single good scene - only one, which still doesn't lead to any surprising, or rather, originally brutal moment.

HairBrained (2013)

Engels It's sometimes crazily twisted in a way that appeals to me, plus there's competitiveness, knowledge, and everything around it, which makes it a topic that I enjoy. It's not great, but it has its nice moments and it's somehow brought to a successful conclusion, which I appreciated. They don't push too hard, mostly.

Zombie Movie (2010) (studentenfilm)

Engels The guys and gals created a film that isn't great but definitely has ambitions for its creators to become someone who will continue doing interesting work. I think their work could be worth it. Zombie Movie is a film that can excite, but it also might not. It's about how you look at the genre and how you give amateur film a chance. This one definitely deserves that chance.

Dersu Uzala (1975)

Engels An immensely powerful film that proved Akira Kurosawa still has the chops to make films the world will remember. And it doesn't matter that it was in Russia. On the contrary, he was able to use the environment in a way that usually only documentary filmmakers can. In this case, it's to the benefit of the plot and it is a really great spectacle. Nature and man are in perfect harmony with and against each other, as are man and society.

Essex Boys: Law of Survival (2015)

Engels A weak revenge movie. It's nice that they're trying to build on something, but even the previous films weren't much to talk about, so this one doesn't really improve their reputation much. Moreover, it's all too evident how amateurish this is and how it lacks something on all fronts from the script, through the acting, to the direction, which doesn't allow any scene to shine. Well, maybe that one scene where it turns a person into a monster thirsting for revenge.

Straight Outta Compton (2015)

Engels I was surprised at how intrigued I was by this film. It's well made, it's a powerful statement, and yet - most of the time - there's no pathos to spoil it. It's dramatic, it's historical, and it's interesting in terms of what you learn. Well, I thought I knew a little something about American rap. But it was really only a little. An excellent film, with absolutely great acting and music.

Search Party (2014)

Engels A repeated joke isn't a joke, so it doesn't really matter that these are the creators who also made The Hangover Part II because it's just a derivative of a fairly successful series. But by trying to emulate it, they're just showing that the series itself ran out of steam with the first film and then just repeated itself. This is more of a comedy tragedy.

Eden (2014)

Engels Yeah, they managed to unfold quite a good drama in a small space, which even has some unexpected twists at times. That's not too shabby for a film like this. The characters are well-developed, and you understand their motivations and the fact that such a situation could easily lead some minds going astray. Who will survive? Will anyone survive? That’s a tough question.

Dirty Weekend (2015)

Engels It's one of those films where you think it could be a great conversational drama/comedy, but in the end, you realize that Neil LaBute is really good primarily on the stage. The film resembles a stage, but for me, it completely underutilizes the resources as a film. Broderick is quite annoying, at times very much so, and Alice Eve is just pretty, nothing more.
