Vampire Hunter D (2000)

Engels The Japanese anime version of Bram Stoker's original story, which mixes several motifs and plot elements, won me over especially thanks to its vampire theme and its truly spectacular audiovisual execution, which deserves admiration. It struck me as a mix Dracula (the most prominent motifs: the relationship between vampire and human and the Van Helsing-like protagonist) and post-apocalyptic sci-fi (some similarities to Mad Max come to mind: the occasional appearance of the landscape and the chase between hunters and "monsters"). I liked the imagination of the creators, who brought a beautiful spectacle to the screen, and I must also not forget the pleasant and unforgettable soundtrack. In short, a solidly made and unconventionally conceived Japanese animation film that , although it didn't get me as much as such Spirited Away or Castle in the Sky, is still a very good film.

Knockin' on Heaven's Door (1997)

Engels After this year's The Most Beautiful Day, I had to watch this film immediately, from which the first mentioned piece drew a lot and according to some users, it was even a significant rip-off (which is not entirely true). Knockin’ on Heaven's Door is definitely an unconventionally conceived tragicomedy about illness, (ubiquitous) death, car chases, mobsters, theft, etc., but despite all these seemingly negative elements, it retains a certain comic detachment. The two main characters simply want to enjoy the last few days they have left, but in doing so they set off a chain of events of a primarily humorous nature, even if there are shootings and escapes all the time. All in all, a well-made film, peppered with references to Pulp Fiction in particular, which, while it didn't grab me by the seat of my pants, still deserves the viewer's attention.

Huisdiergeheimen (2016)

Engels A very enjoyable animated film that gives you a good laugh (especially in the first half when you get to know the characters and during all kinds of falls, jumps, stumbles, etc.), but a deeper story or some kind of level would be hard to find (compared with last year's Inside Out or this year's Zootropolis), although the film did have some references to other films ("Dude, I'm a cat. - Well, nobody is perfect."), which I appreciate. In the end, it's a nicely spent ninety minutes, during which you revel in the animation rather than being offered any thought-provoking material. A film that will mostly entertain younger audiences and potential pet owners.

Mower Minions (2016)

Engels Another of the many "yellow" shorts, in which the Minions try in vain to achieve something – in a very chaotic, but all the more entertaining way.

Der geilste Tag (2016)

Engels A well-made comedy, which along with (for now) both parts of Suck Me Shakespeer ranks among the best pieces Germany has offered us recently. The funny scenes worked very well, as did the grim ones. More than one user has compared The Most Beautiful Day to Knockin' on Heaven's Door, so I decided to see that older film as well. Both films have something in common, and although The Most Beautiful Day borrows many motifs from Knocking, I found it more humorous and direct to the viewer. In short, a decently made film that has a likable cast and a good (albeit previously used) theme.

Bad Moms (2016)

Engels Bad Moms is a comedy that, despite being dominated by a mostly female cast, has balls and isn't afraid to sell it, while maintaining a tolerable level of humour and not slipping into the awkward and disgusting ends of the genre, as is the case with many comedies from current production. I really had a lot of fun and laughed as much as I have in a long time during the film, whether it was during the discussions and banter between the various "bad moms" or purely during the gestures and physical acting of the characters. The cast was well chosen, as each actress in the central trio had her own distinctive comic take on the character she was playing, which worked to a tee. Plus I liked the credit scene with the real mothers of each actress. All in all, a pleasant surprise and a breather all in one with a likeable cast, a properly peppy script and just enough funny moments delivered frequently and in the right doses.

The Teacher (2016)

Engels The Teacher is definitely one of the best films from Czech production (or rather from Czech-Slovak co-production) in 2016. It benefits in particular from the engaging and poignant theme of bullying and exploitation during the communist regime, all set in a school environment that lends itself well to projecting issues of relationships for both children and adults. Another pillar of success was the casting of Zuzana Mauréry in the lead role of teacher Drazděchová, who, as some users have suggested, stands up to comparison with Harry Potter's Dolores Umbridge (the Karlovy Vary award for Best Actress was well deserved in my opinion, although I'm not familiar with the competition). The various interludes between the parents' meeting at the school and what preceded it worked brilliantly, and from the start I was anxiously awaiting the revelation of the "terrible event" for which this meeting was actually held. And the final scene, with the sound of the unmistakable click of heels, got me. All in all, a very well made, written and acted film, which more than once aroused in me a considerable wave of anger and indignation, and made me think about how I would behave in a similar situation.

Suicide Squad (2016)

Engels As a viewer, I found Suicide Squad to be similar to Batman vs Superman in terms of plot, as it was a weaker story compared to the Marvel films and it lacked more humorous scenes (Harley Quinn's function in the film was quite clear, but it still wasn't enough for me). Each of the characters had something to say, but they didn't get enough space in most cases – they went the furthest with Harley, and Deadshot, and Diablo had some good background as well – but I have to admit that the initial introduction to them was portrayed quite well. As with Guardians of the Galaxy, they relied on an oldies soundtrack, which definitely benefited the film. The presence of characters such as the Joker and Enchantress made me happy on the one hand, but I was disappointed that they were either outnumbered or purely for effect. All in all, after adding up all the pros and cons, Suicide Squad is slightly better than Batman vs Superman, but it still falls short of more than one piece of the Marvel Universe, which is a shame because the potential that was evident from the first trailers was there.

The Man from U.N.C.L.E. (2015)

Engels A breezy and relaxing retro film with a very likeable cast (Armie Hammer, Henry Cavill, Elizabeth Debicki and Alicia Vikander), which, despite being labeled a comedy, has the kind of humour that makes you laugh internally. The interactions, and banter between the three main characters worked to a tee, as did the action scenes, of which there were plenty. A decently made genre mash-up with some good plot twists that manages to keep you both in suspense and mildly entertained.

Terry Tate, Office Linebacker (2002)

Engels A humorous short about the highly unconventional practices of a work team, some of whose members do not perform their duties properly and therefore have to be punished – and quite harshly.
