De Emoji film (2017)

Engels I’d say that with this sort of animated movie, the target audience is important. And in this case it is very little kids and perhaps people who send smileys instead of writing, because they think it’s a better or quicker way of expressing their feelings to click in 2 or 5 smileys. Colored pandas dance here. My two-year-old daughter liked it and it gave me some time to pay some bills or do my tax return, which I find more difficult if there is a Pixar movie playing. It serves its purpose.

The White Lotus (2021) (serie)

Engels A bit like Carry On Holiday, but this movie has a quality, satirical script, characters full of character and a semi-mystery plot that has you trying to guess who is going to kick the bucket. Mike White does an excellent job of capturing the imperfections of contemporary society. Aggrieved prima donas with too much money reveal what is important for today’s world and against this the lower classes are just trying to get by, giving birth at work, pretending to be something they aren’t and stealing. Every single acting performances are splendid, but the very best comes from Murray Bartlett as the hotel director, intoxicated by his guests. A great miniseries highlighting the failings of the contemporary world.

Ambulance (2022)

Engels A hard and fast guided tour of Los Angeles and a movie record of exactly the same bank robbery as we see in "Grand Theft Auto V"... the one the ambulance... enriched by the recycled screenplay of the Danish original (thank god for the Scandinavians) about two brothers who need some money. In addition to the very effective camera flybys (guaranteed to make you barf if you watch this at the IMAX), Bay unexpectedly looks into the motivations and the character traits of all the main protagonists. It wrings out all it can from the emotions. Everyone has his place and is important in some way. But character development takes nothing away from this being a heavy-caliber Bay movie with cars crashing into obstacles and automatic weapons firing in the background: artists on the wrong side of the law playing a concert. Gyllenhaal savors playing the looney Danny to the very last drop, whether he is ordering flamingos for a birthday party or persuading his brother to help him rob a bank which this very day happens to have millions of dollars lying in the safe. And you must admit, the rest do a very good job of being extras. Balfe’s frenetic music is full on. Is this movie dumb? Yes. And is it fun? Yes. "You shouldn't have worn fucking sandals, dude."

The Change-Up (2011)

Engels A classic extra-corporeal experience with a frequent and almost unbelievably bizarre humor goes by surprisingly quickly and thanks to the Reynolds/Bateman acting duo, it works in principle. But the humor ranges from shit in the face thru licking fake tits to seriously good jokes that will have you rolling in the aisles, and so it all seems a bit inconsistent. The real trump card here is Olivia Wilde in the position every "full-blooded" guy would like to have her. A decent, bite-size snack.

Svart krabba (2022)

Engels Black Crab has a really promising introduction and a wonderfully gloomy, frozen Norwegian atmosphere to it. The visuals and music are great. The task is... to deliver a gift package across 100 miles of frozen ice performed by a gang of skaters on a suicide mission. Most of the time Noomi and the rest of them too are just fine. But the nearer it gets to the end, the worse the script gets. By the end it has become just a pure-blooded B-movie with a weird realization and overall ending. But it might have been enough to finish with the horses and I would have given it an extra star. Does anybody have an alternative version?

Pam & Tommy (2022) (serie)

Engels The world famous sex tape from the very beginnings of the internet had a fairly unsettled destiny. Pam & Tommy successfully oscillates between comedy, drama and often presents unbelievable situations from the lives of the three protagonists with almost documentary precision. Lily James is fantastic as Pamela and Sebastian Stan, in his role of a lifetime, almost steals the entire show. Rogen’s carpenter is simply another loser who you will feel sorry for and hate at the same time. Every detail of the nineties’ atmosphere is enthralling. The closer we get to the end, the more disturbing the media massage that destroyed this relationship between two people became. Ok, these people were pretty weird, but right for each other.

Game Night (2018)

Engels Ozark meets Dexter. A comedy version of Fincher’s The Game with a family feel. Perhaps more twists than might be wise, but still this is a great watch. One of the best comedies currently showing on Netflix. A must for board game enthusiasts.

Red Dwarf - The Promised Land (2020) (aflevering)

Engels A successful comeback from our space musketeers. Holly was sorely missing from the original gang and it is his return that gives this catty story some pizzazz. The change of format doesn’t matter one bit and I would be all for the Dwarf having better sfx. I know, it wouldn’t be the same without the pasteboard…

The Adam Project (2022)

Engels A B-movie with a huge B. Adam mixes and recycles long since used ideas in an entertaining cocktail of great one-liners, references and nods. Reynolds is exactly the same once again, even though his younger me is even better. This likeable guy is the heart of the entire story. Levy remains an unimpressive director who is lucky in choosing screenplays. Nostalgia, popular science, family, dough = a recipe for success. SPOILER: Hulk is Deadpool’s dad!

Fresh (2022)

Engels A culinary romance for International Women’s Day. Sebastian Stan is dancing in the kitchen, hammering the steaks for dinner... The cute, dating opening changes its tune with the opening credits, turning into a game involving an unusual take on the white slave trade. Daisy Edgar-Jones will have to stomach a couple of things if she wants her new relationship (and herself) to survive. Great music, stylish visuals and great food jokes. The ending is a little predictable, but it doesn’t spoil the aftertaste.
