Engels One of those great Hollywood films made before Pearl Harbor. The important aspect is the play by Lillian Hellman from 1939, which she herself adapted into a film script. The Oscar nominations and, above all, Bette Davis's performance are significant. The grand Southern drama deals with the transformation of a once-proud slave-owning family into a modern business elite. Sub-themes include the roles of women in such families and suppressed homosexuality... that's quite a lot for one story. This is also why Hellman later wrote the prequel play "Another Part of the Forest" (1946). From today's perspective, the portrayal of former slaves in the film is problematic, which subsequently affects the practice of staging that play in theaters. ()
