Eeuwenlang bestaat er een geheim occult genootschap binnen de Kerk. Na een aantal mysterieuze sterfgevallen, gaat de jonge priester Alex Bernier op onderzoek uit. Hij komt op het spoor van de zogenaamde Sin Eater, een gevaarlijke en onsterfelijke figuur die als een soort God op aarde vergeving kan schenken aan de meest verdorven zondaars. De Sin Eater neemt alle zonden op zich waardoor het kwaad ongestraft blijft. In zijn zoektocht ontdekt Alex dat er een veel erger noodlot bestaat dan de Dood. (20th Century Fox)

In filmmaking terms, The Order is solidly made darkness for a very narrow range of (dark) viewers. Its plot is similar to that of Stigmata, but less focused on form and more on content. A film with minimal chance of commercial success.

For fans of mainstream entertainment, it is slightly unsophisticated and lacking artistic ambition. For fans of B-movies, on the other hand, it is unattractive and essentially boring with a bizarre storyline. However, Brian Helgeland tried to handle the problematic script as best as possible, and I wouldn't deny the film its atmosphere. Overall impression: 35%.

This was stupid. I wonder what horrible thing happened to Brian Helgeland to write (this in particular) and direct something as stupid as this "combination" (meaning an irrational mishmash that doesn't know what it is) of all possible film genres. Content-wise, from my point of view, it was about absolutely nothing, it didn't even look that great, and there were so many unintentionally funny moments that I lost track of them. Get this out of here. This movie would make a glutton choke on it.

It was as if the film was trying to say something, but I didn't end up finding out what it was. I was glad to see Heath in another film that I hadn't seen yet, but this wasn't a movie that I'll remember him for. A bit of horror, a bit of exorcism, a bit of critique of the church, but overall just nothing memorable.
