John Stone, an American businessman, receives a parcel marked "Of Gravest Urgency" which contains two old bottles of Slivovitz brandy with instructions to toast his mother's ancestor from whom he has inherited property in England. Despite his wife Helene's fears, John drinks the brandy and over a period of time becomes a vampire. Helene asks Dr. Hank Tyson, a family friend, to help her husband, but the doctor cannot detect the transformation. John visits England to claim his lands and to avenge the death of his ancestor Count Dracula. To recall the manner of Dracula's demise, he thrusts a pool cue through the heart of one descendant, Lord Gold. Returning home, he lives as a vampire and keeps Helene in a trance with Dracula's magic ring. He murders Vivacious Vivian, a burlesque dancer whose cut finger entices him, and Sherri Morris, a descendant of Dracula's murderers whom he meets in Houston. Dr. Howard Helsing arrives from England to end John's vengeful acts. With Dr. Tyson's aid, he forces John into his casket and drives a stake through his heart, awakening Helene from her trance. Engels A Taste of Blood unfortunately is incredibly flat in terms of screenplay and above all, it's stretched out. It's based on the classic legend of Dracula, but what takes up perhaps half an hour in the legendary tale is stretched out to two hours in the film, which is simply unbearable. But it's a shame because Herschell manages to evoke horror quite well here, and the killings aren't just rushed through. ()
