In deze eigenzinnige mix van spionagefilm en observerende documentaire gaat de 83-jarige Sergio undercover in een bejaardenhuis. De vriendelijke oude man wordt ingehuurd door privé-detective Romulo. Sergio mag aan de slag als ‘mol’ voor een cliënt die denkt dat haar moeder in het tehuis wordt mishandeld. Hoewel regisseur Maite Alberdi overtuigend de stijlmiddelen van de film noir inzet, is Sergio niet bepaald weggelegd voor het vak van detective. De eerste horde wordt opgeworpen door pencamera’s, smartphones en alle andere technologie die hij nodig zal hebben om bewijs te verzamelen en terug te rapporteren aan Romulo. Nog lastiger is het dat Sergio, die recent weduwnaar werd, er niet zo goed in is om de voor een spion noodzakelijke afstand te bewaren. Al snel raakt hij bevriend met meerdere bewoners. De droogkomische ondertoon blijft, maar wat begint als detectiveverhaal verschuift en verandert gaandeweg in iets intiemers. Zo geeft Alberdi een originele blik op affectie en eenzaamheid op hoge leeftijd. (International Documentary Film Festival Amsterdam)

The Mole Agent is a truly unconventional documentary that would also stand up as a mix of a spy comedy and a subtle drama about old age and its attendant woes. While the primary motive for the story is the (if possibly subtle) infiltration of a retirement home to obtain information about the staff and residents, the film also deals with more serious issues that are still very relevant today. Many pensioners experience a daunting sense of loneliness, forgetting their loved ones and relying on others for help, yet they can still be a well of years of life wisdom and experience that they would love to pass on to their offspring, who often don't visit them at all. Alongside this more serious line, however, the film has many a humorous moment based on that very old age, giving rise to a touchingly funny story of life with its pros and cons.
