Helena Wittman’s latest, after her 2017 feature Drift, extends that work’s visual interest in movement and stillness, and conceptual focus on peripatetics and place. The film takes its name from the small island on the Romanian Danube that was a Turkish enclave until it was submerged in 1970, taking much of its history with it. Here set in the confines of an apartment inhabited by a group of young people, the film hovers between its exploration of the life inside and outside of four walls. (Viennale)
