De onweerstaanbare Joe en de zwaarmoedige Terry zijn voortvluchtige bankrovers die nog maar één doel voor ogen hebben: genieten van hun paradijs in Mexico. Ze hebben slechts nog een paar overvallen te gaan voordat het zover is. Hun aanpak is eenvoudig. Zonder geweld bezoeken zij de avond voor de overval de bankdirecteur. Ze genieten daar van een diner, blijven slapen en de volgende dag helpt de directeur hen veilig de bank te beroven. Deze aanpak zorgt ervoor dat de logerende bankovervallers als zijnde Robin Hoods, razend populair worden, zelfs bij de bankdirecteuren. Helaas worden de zaken gecompliceerder wanneer de onstabiele, zeer mooie maar vooral eigenwijze persoonlijkheid Kate in hun leven komt. Kate sluit zich aan bij de bankovervallers en steelt niet alleen mee het geld, maar ook hun harten. (Independent Films)

Barry Levinson attempts to bring the nostalgia of classic gangster movies into the contemporary world with the image of the characters, music, cars and props, but his effort is in vain. It’s as if the director is too conservative and the current period is too far removed for him to connect with nostalgia with any sense of detachment. The two lead actors don’t play “likable characters with minor flaws” but fools who don’t deserve the sympathies of the (again, amazing) Cate Blanchett. The humour and dialogue, which are supposed to play a big role here, are VERY weak and even the satirical undertones with the media coverage of events are half-baked. Given the creative team, Bandits is a disappointment. Only the aforementioned Cate Blanchett drags the film up to three stars.

A take on Bonnie and Clyde, this time in a threesome. Willis doesn't surprise, but Bob Thornton as a sensitive hypochondriac and Cate Blanchett as the woman straddling the line between the two men are flawless. The final twist is not as breathtaking and some write here, but for the sake of my beloved Cate and Thornton, I'm going to get over myself and give it four stars.
