Frankrijk 1809. Kapitein Neuville (Jean Dujardin) wordt naar het front geroepen en laat zijn aanstaande bruid Pauline (Noémie Merlant) ontredderd achter. Haar zus Elisabeth (Mélanie Laurent) besluit namens hem brieven aan Pauline te schrijven om haar op te vrolijken. Het loopt allemaal gigantisch uit de hand als Neuville weer opduikt... De rechtschapen Elisabeth en bedrieglijke Neuville zijn tot elkaar veroordeeld. Zij kan hem niet uitstaan. Hij minacht haar.
