In het Los Angeles van 1965 lichten een moeder en haar twee dochters mensen op met séances. Wanneer ze een nieuw trucje toevoegen aan hun repertoire halen ze per ongeluk een echte kwaadaardige geest in huis. Als de jongste dochter bezeten raakt door deze genadeloze geest, moet de familie ondenkbare angsten overwinnen om haar te redden en om de geest die haar in bezit heeft uit te drijven.
