6 Below vertelt het ijzingwekkende, waargebeurde verhaal van ex-ijshockeyspeler Eric LeMarque (Josh Hartnett). Wanneer de ellende in Eric’s leven zich opstapelt besluit hij de realiteit te ontvluchten en met zijn snowboard de bergen in te gaan. Als het weer omslaat, verdwaalt hij in een sneeuwstorm en begint een lange fysieke en mentale strijd. Om te overleven moet Eric niet alleen vechten tegen onderkoeling, uitdroging, hallucinaties en de grillige natuur, maar ook de confrontatie aangaan met zichzelf en de verkeerde keuzes uit zijn verleden onder ogen zien. The fact that a young man could get lost in the mountains is probably quite bearable, but what is less bearable are the constant flashbacks to the past, when the protagonist compares himself with what he has lived through. Yet his fight for survival already works and you almost get the feeling that Josh is trying to get this entire thing to end well. In the end, he's more or less successful.
